He was one of the first priests to visit the Catholics of Baltimore. This was between the years 1776 and 1784, at which latter date a resident priest, Father Charles Sewall, was appointed. The Jesuits at that time lived at Whitemarsh, about midway between Washington and Baltimore. The temporary church used by Father Ashton in Baltimore was an unfinished building, begun by an Irishman named Fotterall. It stood near the present site of Battle Monument, now the centre of civic and commercial activity. It was the first brick building in Baltimore. Finding it abandoned, some Acadian refugees occupied the upper portion which was still habitable. Father Ashton said Mass in the lower room, although the hogs which had taken possession of it had first to be driven out. The priest brought his vestments with him, a rude altar was erected. The faithful never numbered more than forty, and consisted chiefly of Acadians and a few Irish. This is the first Baltimore congregation of the Society of Jesus in 1759. He was first employed in the missions of Yorkshire, England. He must have been a man of business capacity, as at the assembly of the clergymen of Maryland and Pennsylvania, which convened at Whitemarsh, in 1784, he was unanimously elected procurator-general, whose duty it was to preside over the management of the various estates of the clergy. Subsequently in 1788, he was appointed to superintend the building of Georgetown College.

Owing to the penal laws he was sent to be educated at the Jesuit College at Bruges in Flanders, where, after the completion of his secular studies, he desired to enter the Society of Jesus . His father, however, wrote the superiors of the college to send him home Maurice returned to Ireland, much against his own inclinations, but in hope of being able, later on, to carry out his desire. After a brief stay, during which he tried to dissuade his father from opposing his vocation, he went back to Flanders. His old masters at the college of Bruges on learning his father's determination advised him to return to Ireland and devote himself in the world to the service of religion. Shortly after his arrival in Ireland he got an appointment as captain of horse, in which position he did much to edify, and even win back to the Faith, those who served under him. He never abandoned the idea of becoming a priest, and secretly took Holy Orders. His servant, who was aware of the fact, told his father, who had his son immediately arrested and imprisoned in Dublin. A younger brother, desiring to inherit the family estates, also reported Maurice to be a priest, a Jesuit , and a friend of the Queen's enemies. As a consequence he was put on trial for high treason. He was born to a fiercely nationalist family in Kill, County Kildare, in 1842; and all his life he retained an unwavering passion for Irish freedom — the first recorded incident of Devoy’s strong republican convictions being a beating he suffered at age 10 by a schoolmaster because John Devoy refused to sing ‘God Save the Queen’! Irish Republican Brotherhood At age 18, Devoy joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was arrested in 1866 for recruiting British soldiers into the IRB and spent several years in prison before being released and deported to the United States in 1871. There he, along with Daniel Cohalan and Joseph Mc Garrity, helped organise Clan na Gael — the IRB’s American counterpart, also known as ‘The Fenians’. Clan na Gael Legend has it that Devoy once said he, “didn't feel like touching Irish affairs again,” but yet he continued and never once yielded to despair or resignation. He incited growth and direction into Clan na Gael, despite American complacency during the 1890s. And, he oversaw Clan na Gael’s rescue of convicted Fenians from a remote Australian prison ( the Catalpa The Catalpa On August 19, 1876, the whaling ship Catalpa was given a tumultuous welcome as it sailed into New York harbor.

He joined the Dominican Order in early youth and was sent to Rome, where, after ordination to the priesthood, he became professor at St. Clement's, theologian of the Minerva, agent of the Irish Bishops, and Prior of St. Clement's. Both Pius VI and Pius VII held him in high esteem. By his influence he saved the Irish, Scotch, and English colleges and his own convent, church, and library from being plundered by the French invaders. He was nominated Bishop of New York as successor to Bishop Concanen, who had desired his appointment in the first instance. He was consecrated in Rome, 6 November, 1814, but did not reach New York until 24 November, 1815. Despite advanced years and untoward circumstances, he did the fruitful work of both bishop and missionary almost to the day of his death. The diocese then included all New York and part of New Jersey, for which there were only four priests. He built several churches, founded an orphan asylum, and introduced the Sisters of Charity. Actively interested in religious progress throughout the country, he advocated the idea of a diocese in every state as the best means of promoting the cause of the Church. BAYLEY
