    Extractions: Subscribe May 18, 2004 Sentinel staff report Members of the Grateful Dead are doing their part to keep the music of composer Lou Harrison alive. Harrison, an Aptos resident who died a year ago, was recognized internationally for his inventive compositions. He combined Asian and Western musical styles and developed new percussion instruments. His will designated UC Santa Cruz as the site for all of his remaining artistic materials, including his extensive collection of musical instruments. The gifts came from the Rex Foundation, founded by the Grateful Dead and friends in 1984, and the Unbroken Chain Foundation, established in 1997 by Dead bassist Phil Lesh and his wife Nancy. "The Grateful Dead all knew and recognized the contributions of Lou Harrison, and they performed on programs with him and Michael Tilson Thomas at the San Francisco Symphony," said Fredric Lieberman, a UCSC music professor and co-author of a 1998 biography of Harrison.

    Extractions: Mass to St. Anthony was begun when Hitler invaded Poland; a mass for voices and percussion expressing both outrage and hope. Harrison completed the Gregorian-like chant for the entire 5 movements of the work, but only finished the percussion accompaniment for the first 2. The Kyrie is sung to the sounds of the marching Nazi army: vibraphone, snare, field, bass, and brake drums. In contrast, the Gloria is accompanied by bell sounds - as many as Harrison could find - symbolizing the ringing of church bells around the world. After he left San Francisco in 1942, Harrison put the Mass aside for 10 years, and then revised its scoring. In 2001 he restored the original percussion accompaniment for the first 2 movements, adding a piccolo to the Kyrie. This recording thus represents the premiere of the work in its original form.

    Extractions: We begin with several short early-music works, including the "Brief Suite" from recorder-player Don Smithers and his friends, which comprises five lively High-Renaissance dances from various locales and composers. We raise a virtual glass to Lou Harrison, who was born on this day in 1917, as we listen to his Suite for Violin with String Orchestra, performed for us by violinist Maria Bachmann and the New Zealand Symphony under James Sedares. Carnegie Hall will present the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under James Levine in a three-concert series, starting May 16. They play the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s "Tristan und Isolde" this evening. You can hear pianist Peter Serkin , inheritor of father Rudolph's flashing fingers, at the Metropolitan Museum’s Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium on May 14. Tonight he plays Bach's "Italian" Concerto in F, BWV 971, a work devised to be performed without an orchestra, and one of Bach's many efforts to transplant to Germany the Italian concerto style. Harrison was by no means the first American musician to seek creative nourishment across the Pacific, and the experimental aesthetic he upheld has itself become something of a tradition. These experimental leanings can be traced back to his high school years in north California, when in addition to developing skills on piano and violin he essayed some tentative compositional efforts employing quarter-tones. During his three semesters at the San Francisco State Conservatory he acquired a proficiency in horn, clarinet, and harpsichord, immersed himself in but it led to a close involvement with the music of Ives, as yet uncatalogued, underperformed and hardly published. Harrison went on to prepare an edition of the Third Symphony, conducting the first performance in 1947, and helped bring the Fourth Symphony towards its legendary, posthumous premiere. At the same time he acquired a grounding in western composition from Schoenberg, then resident in Los Angeles. Another formative influence from this period was John Cage. Like Cage, Harrison gravitated to New York, where, thanks to the patronage of Virgil Thomson, he made a living as a music critic on the
