    Extractions: Distinguished American composer, writer, educator and gamelan musician. Born in Portland, Oregon, May 14, 1917, he studied with Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg. He has held appointments at the University of Hawaii, San Jose State University, Mills College, and (through a Fulbright scholarship) at four universities in New Zealand. Harrison has had a longtime interest in tuning systems, and has been drawn to the sonorities and textures of Asian music, particularly the gamelan music of Indonesia. Many of his works combine Western instruments with the instruments of the Indonesian gamelan.     Extractions: Editor's note: Lou Harrison passed away February 2, 2003. He will be missed by music lovers everywhere. ALAN BAKER: Cowell is someone that you knew. What was he like as a man? LOU HARRISON: Well he was enormously amiable. He was charming, and he taught you things by saying, "Of course ... you know!" You'd never heard of it before, but by the time he had said it, you'd felt you'd known it all your life, and that's the neatest kind of teaching, of course. He was amiable about meeting requests. I fell in love with some of his piano pieces, and all I had to do was say, "Please play," and he would play them, you know. It was wonderful. Also, I had lessons with him, and they were very stimulating; they were in a car, or in a park, or whatever. Odd moments when he had time to give me a lesson, and I learned a lot from him ... Henry wasn't a prickly haired lion, he was an ongoer and a continuer, unlike the reputation he's had of being a sort of blast. But he wasn't; he had a very good background, a solid background, and knew what to do with it, and where to go.

    Extractions: Since the inception of the first Indonesian music performance program in the United States in the 1950s, the number of gamelan in America has mushroomed. A gamelanthe word translates roughly as "orchestra"is an ensemble comprising primarily pitched percussion. The main instruments of the ensemble are keyed metallophones with trough or tubular resonators, and knobbed gongs, some of which are suspended and some of which are laid horizontally on rope supports. The suspended gongs function in traditional compositions as colotomic markers delineating major structural points in the musical composition; the horizontal gongs traditionally serve a melodic function.(1) At the same time, American composersmany, though by no means all, with roots in the West Coasthave begun to create a new repertory of works designed specifically for the gamelan. During the past two decades, composers throughout the United States and Canada have contributed to a growing repertory of works that call for the Indonesian ensemble alone or in consort with Western instrumental resources.(5)

After thirty years perched in fog and wind above the Pacific in Aptos, California, Lou decided to build a desert retreat, a place to work on commissions, and a place to play. Fifty years ago, Lou wrote that "American music, like so much other American art, is almost completely the product of amateurs." The amateur is like a lover: "He loves something, gets hold of something, and takes a bite off." He adds, "I'm a grown-up kid. Art to me is play. Children get very serious about play. It's not frivolous-it's learning. If it's beautiful, that's a welcome bonus." Designing Lou's Studio with him was fun and delightful. Besides composing music, Lou also wrote poetry, painted, and did calligraphy; He sculpted and loved architecture. Lou had a great fondness for Middle Eastern architecture, and we decided to create a straw-bale home which featured a vaulted Great Room, for work and play, and three smaller domed rooms for living quarters. The building we envisioned would be all straw-bale and could be put together by friends and laborers without special skills or experience in construction. The building we created has strong, simple shapes and solid proportions. The long vault is flanked on one side by three rooms, and on the other by butresses which create shaded outdoor "rooms".
