William Conway commissioned the first one in 1994. It's proper title is HERMA, for cello and string orchestra. William Conway gave it's premier with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra the following year in Glasgow. Truls M¸rk performed that same concerto with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra shortly afterwards, and after that performance we discussed the possibility of a larger concerto being written one day, especially for him. It was only towards the end of last year that I managed to start work on the concerto, which is a joint commission from the Oslo Philharmonic, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with funds made available by N.E.S.T.A., the Scottish Arts Council and Norsk Hydro (sole sponsor of the Oslo Philharmonic since 1990).

Extractions: One of the most important figures in this flowering of Icelandic music is Haflidi Hallgrmsson, born in 1941 in the small town of Akureyri on the north coast of Iceland. He began playing the cello at the age of ten and studied in Reykjavik and at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome. On returning from Rome, he continued his studies in London with Derek Simpson at the Royal Academy of Music and was awarded the coveted Madame Suggia Prize in 1966. The following year he began compositional studies with Dr Alan Bush and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. On leaving the Academy, he remained in Britain, eventually making his home in Scotland on being appointed Principal Cellist with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Recently there have been two commissions from the Northlands Festival in Scotland which have demonstrated Hallgrmsson's growing interest in music theatre. 'Mini-Stories' (1997) for narrator and ensemble sets translated texts by the Russian absurdist Daniil Kharms, and since its premiere has been taken up by the Caput Ensemble and the Hebrides Ensemble. Its deft evocation of a unique world of humour, nonsense and melancholy has been widely acclaimed by audiences and critics. In 1998 he wrote 'Ears Stretch a Sensitive Sail' which was premiered by Evelyn Glennie and the Yggdrasil Quartet.

In Kooperation mit der Wiener Musiktheater-Initiative "Netzzeit" brachte Hallgrimsson Texte des russischen Schriftstellers Daniil Charms, vom NKWD als "Volksfeind" inhaftiert, bevor er 1942 im Leningrader Polizeigefängnis verhungerte, auf die Bühne. Vorsätzlich fehlerhafter Titel des Werks: "Die Wält der Zwischenfälle". Der Komponist färbt die 15 melodramatischen Textszenen samt Zwischenmusiken, Vor- und Nachspiel plus Koloratur-Einlage (bravourös trotz Erkältungsrest: Chantal Mathias) in Singweise und Sprechart, Instrumentenwahl, Klangkombination und Genrewechsel (samt Rockeinlage) so kontrastreich ein, dass sich das Grauen über den Menschen fressenden Trug der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse in Grenzen hält. "Netzzeit"-Regisseur Michael Scheidl entspricht den Tonartwechseln mit einer Vielfalt der szenischen Bilder und Situationen, die Dichter-Erzähler Clemens Löschmann mit seinem Notizbuch Stichwort gebend durchwandert, bis ihn die Stalin-Schergen zur Strecke bringen und lautlos im Müllcontainer entsorgen. Frank Maximilian Hube hält die humanen Schrecken musikalisch in Ordnung.
