Later he married Eleonora d'Este, the niece of Alfonso II, Duke of Ferrara, whose musical interests coincided with his own. He composed devotional works and six books of madrigals which are considered to be of a very advanced chromatic complexity and sensitivity. The sudden changes of tonality, the harmony and intensity of feeling in his music have found particular favour among some modern theorists. Carlo Gesualdo Works His numerous sacred compositions include works intended for the liturgy of Good Friday and Holy Saturday, as well as Marian compositions such as Ave, dulcissima Maria and Ave, regina caelorum. Volumes of sacred music in a Sacrarum cantionum liber primus (First Book of Sacred Songs) of works in five parts and another of works in six and seven parts were published in Naples in 1603. Maria d'Avalos, die Erwählte, erwies sich als denkbar falsch: die 25 jährige nahm Gesualdos Antrag an, noch ehe die Blumen auf dem Grab ihres zweiten Gatten verwelkt waren; vier Jahre später nahm sie sich einen jungen Adligen aus Neapel zum Liebhaber, der unzüchtige, lüsterne Begierden in Donna Marias Busen erweckte. Gesualdo ertappte die beiden in flagranti; während er den Liebhaber seinem Diener überließ, erdolchte er selbst seine Gattin und befahl, die Leichen am nächsten Tag auf der Treppe seines Palastes zur Schau zu stellen. Eine Zeitlang zog sich der Fürst in seinen Palast Gesualdo zurück, doch vier Jahre später, 1594, heiratete er Leonora d'Este. Von Jugend an hatte Gesualdo sich mit Musik beschäftigt, aber erst seit kurzem hatte er zu komponieren begonnen. Nun lockte ihn die Gelegenheit, in das herzogliche Haus von Ferrara einzuheiraten, einer der kunstsinnigsten Höfe des damaligen Italien.

Extractions: Italian composer. Born of a noble Neapolitan family (he became Prince of Venosa), he probably studied music with Pomponio Nenna . Temperamentally he was given to excess, and the sensational murder of his first wife and her lover in 1590 was one of the great sixteenth century musical scandals. His second marriage, to Eleonora d'Este, gave him contacts with the musical circle of Ferrara and the poet Tasso whom he befriended. Gesualdo's output consists of six volumes of five-part madrigals, published from 1594; two books of motets and one of responsories; and a few keyboard works. Though from the south, he is linked by his visits to Ferrara and his friendship with Tasso with the 'mannerist' madrigalists of northern Italy. Wayward harmonies in his earlier madrigals develop, in his later ones, into wild and passionate juxtapositions of fast and slow motion, and of total and extremely chromatic harmony. These violent contrasts seem to reflect Gesualdo's neurotic personality; from a stylistic viewpoint his harmonic experiments are more the ultimate outcome of sixteenth century harmonic vocabulary than prophetic of the music that was to come; it was only in the eccentricity of his melodic lines that some monodists followed .

Extractions: Don Carlo Gesualdo, prince of Venosa, may have been born in Venice on March 8, 1566. Birth records from 16th century Venice are not always reliable. Standard reference literature often states "circa 1560 or 1561" as his birth date. In any case, Gesualdo is known to have died September 8, 1613. He was born into an old and noble Neapolitan family and was the nephew of Saint Charles Borromeo. He became interested in music as a youth and began composing conservative madrigals and sacred works. His personal life, however, was not so conservative. In 1590 he arranged for the murder of his adulterous wife, the lovely Maria d'Avalos, and her lover. Although he was never brought to justice for these acts, the scandal was enormous and many a poet of the time wrote stanzas proclaiming the misfortune of Maria d'Avalos.
