   Extractions: George Gershwin This American composer had a foot in two camps: pop music and concert music. He innovated in both, writing songs and Broadway musicals which not only define the 20s and 30s (especially " Oh, Kay! Girl Crazy , and Lady Be Good ) but break paths which would be fully exploited only later ( Strike Up the Band Of Thee I Sing , and Let 'Em Eat Cake ) with the Rodgers and Hammerstein "book" musicals of the 40s. For the concert hall, he invented a distinctive and immediately identifiable idiom with the poetically-named Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and Piano Concerto in F . Almost every one of his concert works has entered the repertory, and, just as important, the American psyche. In that regard, he is the American equivalent of Verdi. People with no interest in opera hum parts of his Porgy and Bess (1935) without knowing where the material comes from or even that it's part of something larger. He showed an absolute passion to improve his work. He managed to travel a great artistic distance from the relatively simple tunes of Rhapsody in Blue to the great formal resource of American in Paris Cuban Overture (1932), and many scenes in

   Extractions: George Gershwin was born Jacob Gershwin on Sept. 26, 1898 in what is now Brooklyn, New York. He died in Hollywood, California on July 11, 1937. He parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants who had come to this country in search of a better life. The family name had been Gershovitz in Russia, but George anglicized it when he began school. He heard jazz first when he was six, and he was exposed to other forms of music as much as possible. When he was 12, George began to study piano. Gershwin had a significant impact on American music. He wrote the scores for several Broadway musicals, but he was also able to blend different styles of music into something that became totally new. Even after he was a successful composer, George continued to study with people who had a different focus on composition.

    Extractions: In a period in which national American music was developing with composers of the calibre of Aaron Copland and others trained in Europe, George Gershwin, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, went some way towards bridging the wide gap between Tin Pan Alley and serious music. He won success as a composer of light music, of songs and musicals, but in a relatively small number of compositions made forays into a new form of classical repertoire. Stage Works Gershwin has won serious attention with his opera Porgy and Bess, a drama of Black America, set at first in Catfish Row, Charleston, South Carolina. There is an effective instrumental suite, Catfish Row, derived from the opera, while the song Summertime has proved particularly attractive and memorable. Orchestral Music Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, written in 1924 for Paul Whiteman and his jazz band, marries jazz with something of the classical form, an avenue further explored in Gershwin's Piano Concerto of the following year.
