The works described are: NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND - a tape piece in col-laboration with Melissa Gould's light installation, FLOOR PLAN; THE MAGNETIC GARDEN, collective musical earthwork united by Curran's underground sound chambers and musics emulating biological time; and THE LISTENING WELL - an interactive listening and performing space around a well, here made to playback a continous sound-portrait of the world, as well as to dialogue with sounds "cast in" it by the public. As I flew above the earth with a flock of migrating birds, I swore I heard things that simply must have been the pure sounds of entropy, fission, infinity, hell, silence. They came alternately in updrafts of dense mixes, that buoyed our flight. If this is what the surface of the earth sounds like, what might its "music" be deep inside, at the source?

Alvin Curran, a persistant innovator in today's new music world, brings the whole environment into unpredictable focus through his sonic fireworks, sharp wit and timeless lyricism. Curran studied with Elliott Carter at Yale in the early 1960's and in 1966 co-founded the legendary Music Elettronica Viva with Richard Teitelbaum and Frederic Rzewski. He has composed for the Ursula Oppens, and is a close collaborator with the Trisha Brown Dance Company. He is a guest faculty member at the prestigious Mills College and has recordings available on the New Albian label. Curran, the MEV veteran, has done some beautiful work over the decades although, for my taste, much of it (like the compositions For Cornelius and Era Ora) was in an avant-romantic vein parallel to that mined by Rzewski. Still, some of his more purely electronic and experimental works have been intriguing and the idea of a collaboration with the fine Sicilian electronicist (and, in the past, bassist) Domenico Sciajno, recently represented in fine light on the duo with Giuseppe Ielasi on Erstwhile as well as a wonderful solo bass album on Fringes, portended some excitement. Expectations are only partially met, however. My suspicion is that, however diligently Mr. Curran has attempted to keep up with trends in contemporary electro-acoustic improvisation, his core lies elsewhere, no longer in a line directly from the experimentation of MEV but more in a melding of culturally nostalgic phenomena (particularly those of the Jewish tradition) with certain aspects of free improvisation as it was practiced in the 60s and 70s. Sciajno attempts to accommodate but, to the extent pieces on this disc succeed, they tend to work far better the more Sciajno comes to the fore and asserts his own conception. The album opens with Someone to Watch Over What, the already aggravating title alluding, obviously, to the old standard which is interpolated throughout in brief phrases on sampled violin or piano, popping up amidst fairly harsh electronics. Theres something of a collage effect, heavy on the samples, and on the whole the piece reminds me of Currans off-and-on successful collaboration with ROVA from a decade or so back. The problem with the piece, the weakest here, is both the kitschy use of the theme (intentional though that may be) and the lack of commitment to

Extractions: Live Performance Instrument for Alvin Composer Alvin Curran has been performing live with electronic instrunts for decades. One of his performance setups was a piece of software written with Max/MSP that did some simple filtering and looping on input signal. He approached me with the hopes of acquiring an instrument that was more versatile, more efficient, capable of a much wider range of processing and able to store presets. Together we conjured a system that performed a variety of digital signal processing (phase vocoding, harmonizing, looping, granular manupulation, comb filters, delays, filtering, reverb and a panning system). These processing modules were ordered the way he wanted them, and connected in a way to avoid unneccessary CPU usage. Alvin had also developed some very sophisticated sampler instruments that he was playing with AKAI samplers. I also brought his whole AKAI world into the Max/MSP application that I designed for him thereby reducing his setup to a single Apple Powerbook and a MIDI Keyboard. This screen shot shows the main control interface for Alvin's new instrument. Input signal (from his software sampler instruments, or microphones) flows from top to bottom, going through each processing module (colored boxes). Individual wetness measures for each module allow him to find interesting mixes of processing; modules with no wetness are turned off to avoid additional CPU usage.
