In his 1988 piece Crystal Psalms Alvin Curran uses the powerful spiritual nature of music to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht , the "Night of Broken Glass," which was the first major attack on German Jews. After two nights of so-called "spontaneous" rampages, thousands of Jewish businesses, synagogues, and homes were looted and burned, hundreds of Jews were injured, almost one hundred people were killed, and thirty thousand people were deported.

After studying with Elliott Carter, Curran quickly found his first musical home as co-founder in 1965 of the group Musica Elettronica Viva (among the principal originators of spontaneous music making) and thereafter became known for his solo ambient music performances with their exquisite natural soundscapes - the conceptual beginnings of sound installation. Since then he has composed over 100 works from string quartets to vast concerts of ship horns, radio concerts simultaneously per-formed by hundreds of musicians in several different world capitals, visually and musically stunning electronic sound installations, and a unique body of solo piano music which has been widely played and recorded. Alvin Curran's music begins and ends with sound as a sustaining element of life - an ever expanding research into the meaning of all audible experience. From the Magnetic Garden 1973, Curran's "voice" is best heard in his legendary solo performances - these are virtuoso spontaneous compositions in a very cool but intense music-theater, which combine his brilliant pianism with natural sounds, voice, wind instruments, and electronics. Pure sonicpoetry of madness, lyricism and wonder combined.

Extractions: A tone-poem for radio that draws on a number of never-used sounds from the composer's archives, as well as newly recorded materials such as the magical singing tones of high-tension wires in the wind, and the elusive musical hums of the Bay of La Speza (Italy). These sounds are as much about acoustic spaces as they are about geographical ones, and while all vastly different, are powerful sources of natural melody, rhythm, and harmony. Above all they are sounds that suggest the presence of "voices", human, ghostly or otherwise. The definitive character of A Beginner's Guide to Attracting Birds is given by the gradual and continuous digital transformation of these sounds into those of human voices. The work culminates in the slow emergence of John Cage's voice, based on fragmented samples of his Charles Eliot Norton Lectures (1988/89). Commissioned by NEW AMERICAN RADIO.

Extractions: BASICS QUESTION: WHAT IS IMPROVISATION? SCROLL DOWN GUEST: Alvin CURRAN (Italy /USA) Alvin CURRAN plays spontaneously in Brussel's "Plan K " (1980) The Art of Becoming Sound Improvisation is the art of becoming sound. It is the only art in which a human being can and must become the music he or she is making. It is the art of constant, attentive and dangerous living in every moment. It is the art of stepping outside of time, disappearing in it, becoming it. It is both the fine art of listening and responding and the more refined art of silence. It is the only musical art where the entire "score" is merely the self and the others, and the space and moment where and when this happens. Improvisation is the only musical art which is predicated entirely on human trust and love. The art of improvisation assumes (and for me unequivocably proves) that human beings are musical beings and that not unlike the great natural musicians of the animal kingdom - from crickets and cicadas to whales, wolves and lions - all human beings are born with, possess and participate in some form of music. Regardless of the musical context (the people place or time, tradition or style) the art of improvisation puts the full responsibility for the music being made on the persons making it, and for the entire duration of its making. Improvised music is, however, generally based on something: a word, a set of fixed tones, a melody, rhythmic pattern, chordal sequence, timbral change, gesture (crescendo, diminuendo, fragmentation, drone etc), a reaction, a memory, a dream. Or any combination of these. All musical cultures employing forms of improvisation, codify these forms around a specific set of sounds developed through a long historical process.

His touching soundscapes were a happy confirmation of my improvisional behavior. In the nineties he collaborated with Melissa Gould (NY) in many sound installations.
