Inspired by the legacy of the American experimental music tradition, his nearly 100 works embrace all the "contradictions." From these he forges a very personal musical language from all the "languages." He is dedicated to the restoration of of dignity to the profession of making non-commercial music as part of a personal search for future social, political and spiritual forms. Among his many fruitful collaborations are works for and with: The Trisha Brown Dance Co., The Kronos Quartet, Rova Sax Quartet, the Margaret Jenkins Dance Co., the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio, John Cage, The Bang on a Can Allstars, the Relache Ensemble, The Paul Dresher Enesemble, the San Francisco Contemporary Players, Ars Ludi, Joan Jonas, Yoshiko Chuma, Melissa Gould, David Lang, The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, The Radio Orchestra of Stuttgart, The Studio Akustishce Kunst - WDR Cologne, The Radio Choruses of Berlin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Paris, the Achim Freyer Ensemble, video artists Joan Logue and Ulli Sigg, the computer group the HUB, the group Musica Elettronica Viva with Frederic Rzewski, Richard Teitelbaum, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton and Maryanne Amacher. He has been the Milhaud Professor of Composition at Mills since 1992 where his seminars and private lessons underline every aspect of being a professional in today's new-music world.

It also marks the first release in Mode's Edition Yvar Mikhashoff , a series documenting the great artistry of the late pianist. Yvar Mikhashoff was a champion of new and neglected music his unique style revealed new facets and insights to every score he played. The full scope of his pianistic brilliance will be showcased in Mode's comprehensive Edition Yvar Mikhashoff , including solo composer recitals, four volumes of The Great American Piano , a disc of Tangos, three discs of Melodramas, and releases of Mikhashoff's own Opera Transcriptions and compositions. On this first volume of the Edition he turns his attention to his friend Alvin Curran. Curran's music is enjoying increased exposure in the market lately, with recent releases on Catalyst, New Albion and Tzadik. The three works here are all "in memoriam" to Curran's friends and mentors: composers Morton Feldman and Cornelius Cardew and Julian Beck, cofounder of the Living Theater.

It opens with a dotted quarter at 50. From the start implications appear and never cease. They remain open like a river for business. Ten minutes later it turns up a 54 Waltz scrutinized by a group of unemployed harmonica players in the center of Darmstadt. It then visits Persia, Buffalo and Irene coming to rest on a bed of one note hymns in Braxtons former studio. Schtyx are a rim-shot away from the Grand Canal, there a gondoliere can be heard singing an early Christian song by Wolf. Later in the day on Piazza Navona, Willie 4X Jam will be seen selling cool hip-hop riffs to a gang of Neapolitan bass-drum smugglers.
