The purpose of the Fund is to support and encourage public performances and recordings of Henry Cowell’s music. The Fund will award a total of approximately $10,000 - $20,000 biennially to individuals and organizations through this program. Modest grants will generally range from $500 - $5,000. Eligibility top Proposals may be submitted by non-profit professional performing ensembles and presenting institutions, or by individual performers. Performing ensembles must have a performance history of at least two years prior to the time of application. Applications may be submitted for support for as few as one performance or recording of a single work by Henry Cowell. Student ensembles are not eligible to apply.

    Extractions: Henry Cowell Redwoods State park is nestled in the forested coastal mountains just a few miles from the city of Santa Cruz. It is nearly 1800 acres of remarkable diversity...huge venerable redwoods, lush stream canyon, open sunny meadows, pine and oak forests and high dry chaparral-covered ridges. Wildlife is plentiful, ranging from the commonly seen jays and squirrels to the more elusive owls and bobcats. The Ohlone Indians lived here in quiet harmony with their surroundings for many thousands of years. The Spanish and Mexican periods left their marks on the land as did American pioneers such as Henry Cowell himself. A hundred years ago much of Santa Cruz County belonged to Henry Cowell. He and his brother came to California from Massachusetts in 1849, drawn by the lure of gold. Like many before them, they soon found that the road to wealth lie not in the goldfields, but in merchant endeavors which supported the miners. They established a successful drayage business in the San Francisco Bay area. His wealth assured, Cowell moved his family to Santa Cruz in 1865. He diversified his business interests by acquiring lumber and limestone operations. By 1886 Cowell was reported to have the highest income in Santa Cruz County and owned 6,500 acres of prime land. This included over 1600 acres adjacent to Welch's Big Trees Resort. Big Trees Resort was the most impressive grove of redwoods along an eight mile stretch of railroad connecting the town of Felton and the city of Santa Cruz. To meet the demands of tourists, Joseph Welch built a resort, complete with cabins, dining hall and dance pavilion. It's visitors included such dignitaries as presidents Benjamin Harrison and Theodore Roosevelt. An interesting sidelight is that in 1899 Andrew Hill took some pictures of redwood trees in Welch's Big Tress Resort. When Mr. Welch demanded that he surrender the photographic plates, Andrew Hill became incensed. This incident sparked the movement which culminated in the creation of Big Basin park.

After negotiating the winding Santa Cruz mountain roads, we found ourselves at the huge Henry Cowell parking lot at about 11:30am. I stopped in the gift shop to get a park map for $2 and then off we went. We started our journey on Redwood Grove Loop Trail, a short, paved nature trail with signposts to accompany a 25 cent brochure (which I hadn't purchased from the gift shop). Redwoods toward 50 feet and more above us. There was a typical display with a cross-section of a tree so you could count the rings of one of the felled redwoods. The loop is lined with wooden litter boxes, and at the far end is a bathroom. After that, the pavement ends...for a short while. We crossed the Pipeline Road, which is paved, to reach the River Trail, which runs right next to the Pipeline Road. We soon found that we'd be sharing the trail with horses. We stepped to the side of the trail to let 5 or 6 horses pass us in the opposite direction. Signs of horses were present throughout our hike, and we ran into horses frequently perhaps 20 or 30 horses during the day.

The pioneer in prepared piano techniques, Cowell's approach, at times, is really an attackhe strikes with elbows, climbs inside and plucks strings, uses his entire fist on the keys as a way of changing harmonic direction. Amidst this modern mayhem lands strong marching melodies and charging, bright clusters of chords. The piano, as a response, grumbles, rolls, and purrs, and even Cowell's gentle stroking of the keys can sound like thunder. His techniques were so groundbreaking and unidentifiable that even Bartok wrote to ask Cowell's permission in order to experiment with clusters himself.

Cowell was born in Menlo Park, California into a rural family. He was encouraged to study music by his parents, and played the violin from an early age. He began to compose in his teens, producing the piano piece The Tides of Manaunaun , which calls for the pianist to use his forearm to play many notes at once. This is one of the first uses of the tone cluster in music, and he continued to use it liberally in his later works. Despite his experimental leanings, he received no formal musical education (and little education of any kind) until he attended the University of California, Berkeley . There he studied under Charles Seeger who encouraged him to study more traditional musical subjects like harmony to compliment his experimental spirit. In 1919 Cowell wrote and published New Musical Resources , a widely read work on the variety techniques used in his own music. Shortly thereafter he began to tour as a pianist, playing his own experimental works. Aeolian Harp (1923) is one of his first pieces for what is termed the "string piano" - rather than using the keys to play the instrument, the pianist reaches inside the instrument and plucks and scrapes the strings directly. This technique was later an inspiration to
