Extractions: As a result of the Revolution in Russia, after 1917, Stravinsky lived in Paris and was unable to draw on funds from his homeland. He therefore composed a number of compositions, including two Concertos for piano, that he could play or conduct in order to make a living. In his compositions he drew upon the forms and styles of many composers from Bach to Shoenberg. His first religious choral work, written in 1930, was 'The Symphony of Psalms' followed, in 1948, by a Mass for four voices and wind instruments. Stravinsky's last composition in the genre, which he described as 'a pocket mass in nine short movements' was Canticum Sacrum (Sacred Canticles), written in 1956.

Extractions: Composer index Adolf Fredrik Lindblad Sweden (1801 - 1878) There was hardly an indigenous symphonic tradition to speak of in Sweden. A few rather modest works bearing the title sinfonia had been composed during the eighteenth century by Roman and Agrell, and several more by immigrant musicians, above all from Germany. The foremost classical symphonist in Sweden at the time is hardly known even to musicologists; Joachim Nikolas Eggert. His four symphonies have such qualities that they should be in the repertory, even internationally. At that time symphonies were not something that interested Swedish audiences, unless they were by foreign composers. Ambitious Swedish composers themselves admitted, with the exception of Franz Berwald, that they could not establish themselves as symphonists, a view borne out by the actions of audiences and critics. They tended to compose on a smaller scale, above all undemanding songs and piano music. Such intimate music belonged in the homes of the middle classes, rather than on the concert platform. Symphonic repertory was heard in such an environment, but not in orchestral form, rather as arrangements for piano-four hands. Especially renowned was the circle of the cultural elite that regularly used to gather at the Uppsala home of Malla Silfverstolpe, a colonel's widow. The most senior of this group was professor of history Erik Gustaf Geijer the elder, the first in a line of poet-musicians, who wrote both text and music of his songs. The romantic poet Atterbom would also be there. And in April 1823 Adolf Fredrik Lindblad was welcomed for the first time to Malla's literary-musical salon.

Extractions: FRANZ BERWALD (1796-1868) Excerpts from the sleeve notes SYMPHONY IN A MAJOR (fragment) All that remains of the first Symphony (in A, 1820) is an autograph manuscript score of the first movement from which the ending has been torn off. Since the musical argument of this fragment is so strong (and even substantially longer than the first movements of any of the four existing symphonies) I approached my friend and colleague Duncan Druce to make a completion for me. His task was not helped by the abrupt ending of the torso just as Berwald was introducing some new violin figuration. Nevertheless the final sixty-six bars he has added (to the 425 or so of Berwald) make subtle and appropriate use of the composers previous material and provide a satisfying whole for our consideration. The Symphony in A received its first (and presumably complete?) performance together with the Violin Concerto on 3 March 1821. The commentator in the Argus gave a damning account of the concert and chastized Berwald in the strongest terms for his misplaced originality. (In fact Berwald suffered the same fate in the Nya Dagligt Allehanda on 6 December 1843 after the first performance of the Sinfonie sérieuse and there were no further performances of any of his symphonies during his lifetime.) Berwald was clearly incensed by the earlier review, yet he was in no way deterred and wrote a challenging reply. Nevertheless it must have contributed to his growing disenchantment with the conservative Stockholm musical establishment and might explain why he left Sweden for two substantial periods (18281842 and 18461849), travelling to Berlin as well as Paris and Vienna.
