    Extractions: Before the 19th century, professional musicians were trained in the same way as artisans. A pupil would either be taught by a close relative and enter the family trade of musician, or be formally apprenticed to a working musician. The Royal Academy of Music was founded within this tradition in 1822 and the following year a group of thirty-five twelve-year old boys and girls became the first students. This was considered an appropriate age for young people to embark on their training; in fact it was not until 1847 that the Factories Act limited the working day of teenagers in industry to ten hours. The Royal Academy of Music was founded at the instigation of Lord Burghersh, who became the Earl of Westmoreland in 1853. He was an aristocrat and diplomat who was able to call on the support of royal and noble patrons. He maintained a close personal control over all aspects of the running of the Academy until his death in 1859 and it is noticeable in the early records that the financial state of the Academy always suffered when he was working abroad. He was a keen amateur composer and saw to it that the students frequently performed his works. Image: Charles Lucas
