Extractions: Our research group is involved in the design, synthesis and development of structurally and mechanistically diverse biological and chemotherapeutic agents. The majority of this research effort is expended in one of the most successful areas for the development of potentially active chemotherapeutic agents, antimetabolites. The antimetabolite approach has been used with considerable success in the search for effective antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, and anti-cancer agents. The design, synthesis and evaluation of the tricyclic nucleoside 5'-phosphate (TCN-P) is an excellent example of the success which can be achieved by using this approach since TCN-P has been recently placed on Phase II clinical trials as an anti-cancer agent. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a major cause of sickness and death among AIDS victims, infants and organ transplant patients. Our research group has designed and synthesized a number of compounds in diverse heterocyclic systems (e.g., pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine, benzimidazole, and purine) as part of a national cooperative drug discovery group supported by NIAID. Several compounds are currently undergoing evaluation for HCMV activity in animal and pre-clinical studies, in addition to a benzimidazole derivative which is currently in Phase II clinical trials against HCMV infections.

Leboulch Advances in angiogenesis research have shed a new light on the growth and metastasic spread of solid tumors, allowing to define new paradigms for cancer treatment. These studies have highlighted the dramatic therapeutic potential of natural inhibitors of angiogenesis, which were found capable of maintaining tumors in a state of dormancy. One of the most promising of these recently described natural inhibitors of angiogenesis is endostatin, a C-terminal fragment of collagen XVIII. In-vitro, endostatin strongly inhibits endothelial cell proliferation and migration. Initial in-vivo studies were impressive, recombinant endostatin was shown to induce regression and prevent the growth of experimental tumors in mice. All students will initially be registered for the MChem degree with the real decision as to whether to continue to a BSc or MChem being made at the end of the second year, with candidates needing to obtain at least a lower second class pass (2:2) in their Second Year to be allowed to proceed to MChem. The BSc degree is especially suitable for those with ability in Chemistry and a wish to enhance their understanding of the subject but who see their careers as science-related (teaching, sales, management, etc.) rather than fully committed to chemical research. The MChem degree is more suitable for those whose interests develop towards a research career: the MChem programme aims to develop the knowledge and skills required by those who have postgraduate study and employment in Chemistry as their career goals.
