Extractions: Home In 1860, chemistry was a far cry from what it is today. There was no periodic table, materials were often impure, and safety considerations were minimal. Electricity was not regularly employed even in a laboratory setting. Yet there was a good deal of practical accumulated knowledge. Even if the theories were crude and inaccurate, the applications of chemistry were already diverse and numerous, as these volumes illustrate. These two volumes are on the web because they interested me, and I wanted archives of them for my very own. It was a short hop, skip, and jump from personal archival to public. I ask for no fees and impose no restrictions of use upon these materials, which are (at least in the original format) well into the public domain. Of course, should you do anything interesting with them I would request that you mention where they came from. Reading will probably be painfully slow unless you have broadband or cache material locally before reading. The whole book is presented as a series of PNG files, so a reasonably modern browser is required to display the inline images. Most of the pages have been shrunken and reduced in number of colors to save on bandwidth. This is not true for the pages at the beginning of each volume, including the index pages. The index pages are more detailed than the clickable index I have prepared myself. You may want to look at them. The shrunken scans are each about 200 kilobytes. The non-shrunken ones are about a megabyte. Why didn't I use OCR? A) I didn't have an OCR program handy. B) I doubt it would yield web-friendly output. C) I didn't relish checking each of ~2000 pages for the inevitable OCR glitches.
