Extractions: JOHN WILLARD YOUNG Born 1 October 1844, in Nauvoo, Illinois, to Brigham Young and Mary Ann Angell, John Willard Young was ordained an apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by his father on 4 February 1864. In 1866 and 1867 he filled a mission to Europe. Following his return in 1867, he became a subcontractor under his father in the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad line through Echo Canyon. This was the beginning of a long career of railroad building. Young was one of the organizers of the Utah Central Railroad, which helped connect Salt Lake City to the transcontinental line to the north. In 1871 he helped organize the Utah Northern Railroad, which extended north from Ogden to Franklin, Idaho. In 1872 he became president and general manager of the Salt Lake City Railroad, a horse-drawn streetcar line. In the meantime, John W. Young had been appointed an assistant counselor to President Brigham Young and, after the death of George A. Smith in 1876, he was chosen as first counselor in the First Presidency. After the death of his father in 1877, he was sustained for several years as a counselor to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He again began the promotion of railroads and other enterprises. His activities took him to Europe for a time, and he later resided in Washington, D.C. He then moved to New York, where he spent the remaining years of his life. He died 12 February 1924 at the age of seventy-nine.

Related Collections: see below Biographical Sketch: John Mair Lisgar Young was born on November 7, 1912 in Hamheung, Korea to Luther L. and Catherine F. (Mair) Young, Canadian Presbyterian missionaries. John began his education there in Korea and later moved to Kobe, Japan, where he graduated from the Canadian Academy. He received the degrees of B.A. (1934) and M.A. (1935 from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, doing thesis work in the field of the German Reformation. He then attended Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia from 1935 to 1937, before transferring to Faith Theological Seminary, where he graduated in 1938. He was both licensed and ordained to the ministry later that same year. On February 8, 1968 he married Jane Brooks, a faculty member in the English department. They remained at Covenant until his retirement in 1981, at which time they returned with their daughter to Japan. Work there continued under the auspices of World Presbyterian Missions, the foreign missions arm of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod. Dr. Young served as president of WPM for three years. Two of his sons currently serve as foreign missionaries in Japan.

After earning his doctorate in psychology at the University of California (Berkeley) in 1938, he taught at the Connecticut College for Women (New London) and Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, MA). Mr. Gardner entered Federal service in 1942 as chief of the Latin American Section of Foreign Broadcast Intelligence Service of the Federal Communications Commission. The following year he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned to the Office of Strategic Services, where he served in Washington, D.C., Italy, and Austria. Mr. Gardner joined the staff of the Carnegie Corporation as executive associate in 1946, and became its president in 1955. In 1965, Mr. Gardner joined President Lyndon Johnson's Cabinet when he was appointed Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, a position he held until 1968.
