Extractions: Wong Kar-wai's decidedly magnificent, and perhaps notorious, sole foray into period martial arts, taken from Louis Cha's classic novel 'Eagle Shooting Heroes'. More about insistent memory than triumphant swordplay, Ashes of Time is an "action movie about inaction," about swordsmen in their twilight, seemingly at the edge of the world, marooned by thoughts tantalizingly clouded with lovesick memories, by the ache of loves lost. Every character herein pines for someone offscreen, and the desiccated landscape, the Leonesque use of close-ups and Morricone inspired scoring, and the amazing pitch-perfect performances from the most glamorous stars ever to shine down on earth make these characters resonate with the force of archetypes. Though the blur of action sequences are certainly dazzling and glorious, this is mostly a movie of lone figures staring towards unseen, sometimes internal, horizons, their hearts lodged in another time. (The narrative suitably skips or inverts a couple of beats.) A movie about and for the lovelorn, especially if the object of love is movies. For the properly susceptible, Ashes of Time is one of the swooniest movies ever made. Grandly filmed by Christopher Doyle, with a palette and scale that requires the large screen.

Over the years, Doyle has pushed his camerawork beyond the painterly to achieve striking results.[8] Between them, Wong and Doyle have developed a visual motif that appears in all of their films together: some strategic scenes are shot at a slower film speed ("undercrank" in Hollywood jargon), so the action is speeded up; then, the frames are step-printed Strangely, Wong himself downplays the significance of his disruptive visuals: Chungking Express Fallen Angels , and Happy Together Ashes of Time Ashes of Time Ashes of Time wuxia pian ). Extractions: Marking Wong Kar-wai's first foray into feature film, As Tears Go By subverts the familiar images of frenetic violence and non-stop action endemic in contemporary Hong Kong films with a more somber, atmospheric, and contemplative portrait of failed connection and unrequited longing. Wong incorporates evocative, highly stylized elements that would become the filmmaker's indelible aesthetic signature: chaotic chase sequences reflected through fragmented, stroboscopic motion (later implemented in Chungking Express ); integration of music as a leitmotif for the characters' emotional state (which, in the film's case, is an idiosyncratic rendition of Berlin's Take My Breath Away sung in Chinese); the sentiment of adrift melancholy articulated through dispassionate voice-over narration, toy airplanes, and transitional (and allusively transcendent) images of travel (most notably in the interstitial shot of passing buses as Wah reads Ah-Ngor's letter); the permutability of time through accelerated and slow motion sequences and narrative ellipses (the final image of Wah that momentarily triggers a flashback). Presenting a contemporary urban drama that is both socially relevant and philosophically existential, the film serves as haunting and provocative examination of the consequence of obligation, the irreconcilability of fate, and the tragedy of missed opportunity.

It turned out that Kar-Wai was a fan of Shadow's music and was keen to direct for him. The idea was to make a short film revolving around the song's hook line, "Tomorrow never comes until it's too late...." The plot centers around a guy who, upon discovering his girlfriend has betrayed him, tries to destroy all traces of their relationship, eventually realizing that what is done cannot be undone.

Extractions: Two lovers embrace one another and make love. Just moments later, one abandons the other on the roadside. So begins the trajectory of "Happy Together", the latest film by director Wong Kar-wai. It is a road fraught with loss, sadness, and the misplaced expectations of not just the two characters of the film, but the film itself, which explores these elements to find things not quite as they are expected to be. The image of Argentina, where the film takes place, of homosexuality (the two lovers are male), are just two of these elements. We talked to Wong Kar-wai about his film and about misplaced expectations. Question : What have you been doing for the past couple days in New York? Wong Kar-wai : Two of my films are being shown in the New York Film Festival so I just dropped by and also because one of the films, "Happy Together," is going to be released in this country; it's showing in New York City already, and so we're spending time doing interviews. Question : The name of your film is "Happy Together." What is happiness?

By directing the endless adventures of the heart, the convulsions of a love which is often extinguished before it is even born, Wong Kar-wai talks in a fundamental way about the individualÕs relation to experience, about the domination of the past over the present, about the "elimination" of identity, about intimacy through distance (the distance of the gaze), about memory (as stationary time) and about time (as a continuous flow), about the weight of memory and catharsis, and about liberation from the bonds of the past. An event (experience) and its reverberations, and its reflections in a person's memory: it is nostalgia which Wong is filming and it is from its domino that the film's heroes are called upon to escape. As they sink into a deeply subjective universe, where the experience and the memory of nostalgia imprisons their existence, they struggle to express their emotions as clearly as they can, externalizing all the tempests, all the troubles of the heart, and confessing the passions of the soul. It is not surprising therefore, that each of Wong's films invariably ends in a confession. The character who, almost silent throughout the film, has suffered the torments and suffering of love, is now freed through the act of confession: Maggie Cheung as Peach Blossom (in

Though the director already enjoyed a solid arthouse and cult reputation, In the Mood for Love garnered his widest mainstream acclaim thanks to its dizzying atmosphere and the star power of its two leads, a period dressed pairing made in movie heaven. In 1962 Hong Kong, newspaper man Chow (Tony Leung) and his wife move into an apartment where another couple by chance is also settling in down the hall. Left alone to unpack due to his wife's perpetual absence, Chow strikes up a silent rapport with the other couple's female half, Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung), a secretary whose husband also leaves her constantly in solitude. They pass each other on the stairs and in the hall, but significant clues lead to an encounter in a noodle shop where they realizes their respective spouses are having an affair.
