Stevie Ray Vaughan, blues musician and guitar legend, was born in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas on October 3, 1954, to Jim and Martha Vaughan. Stevie's exposure to music began in his childhood, as he watched his big brother, Jimmie, play guitar. Stevie's fascination with the blues drove him to teach himself to play the guitar before he was an adolescent. By the time Vaughan was in high school, he was staying up all night, playing guitar in clubs in Deep Ellum, qv Texas Flood . David Bowie had Vaughan play lead guitar on his album, Let's Dance , and join him on his 1983 tour. Vaughan's fame immediately soared. The band signed a record contract with CBS/Epic records and came to the attention of veteran blues and rock producer, John Hammond, Sr. Texas Flood received the North American Rock Radio Awards nomination for Favorite Debut Album, and Guitar Player Magazine Reader's Poll voted him Best New Talent and Best Electric Blues Guitarist for 1983. A track off the album also received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental performance. Vaughan's subsequent albums met with increased popularity and critical attention. Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of the leading blues and rock guitarists of his generation came from obscurity to enjoy a meteoric success in the early 1980s. He was a technical virtuoso who played with lightning speed and was a master of the explosive sound effects that had been pioneered by Jimi Hendrix. Essentially a blues traditionalist, he played solos in a style that was characterized by one critic as "a smooth, long-lined summation of Texas blues, ornately filigreed phrase after phrase." The unknown group, thanks to word of mouth, soon performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The concert attacked the attention of David Bowie who later asked Stevie Ray to play lead guitar on Bowie's next album, "let's Dance." After playing as a sideman with the Rolling Stones and Jackson Browne, he finally recorded his first solo album in 1983 called "Texas Flood." The record and Stevie Ray Vaughan were a success, the album sold 500,000 copies and won two Grammy nominations. The following year the band won it's first Grammy Award for best traditional blues recording in 1984 for "Blues Explosion."

Said Guy later: "It was one of the most incredible sets I ever heard Stevie play. I had goose bumps." The helicopter took off in fog around 12:40 A.M. with Vaughan and four others aboard. Sweet Chicago would never be reached. Moments later the chopper's remains lay spread across more than 200 feet of a man-made ski slope in a field dotted with bittersweet and Queen Anne's lace. All on board were killed instantly in what National Transportation Safety Board investigator William Bruce later described as "a high-energy, high-velocity impact at a shallow angle."
