van halen albums. van halen - concerts. But really, barring 5150 , the split has gone pretty much downhill for both Roth and van halen.

Extractions: This is not a bad live album at all. The songs are pretty faithfully reproduced, there's enough variation in the instrumentation to keep the listener from getting bored, the songs are slightly faster paced and hard-hitting, and the selection is decent. Hagar does best on his own stuff, particularly in songs from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and (probably one of the best VH albums with Hagard). The twi album set includes classic live versions of songs like Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love Judgement Day When it's Love Right Now (I dislike the chorus of this song), Why can't this be Love? , and You Really Got Me . It is worth getting from a CD club or used, but not buying new. Even David Lee Roth never wrote lyrics this insipid. If you listened to their last studio album, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge , you hear VH taking a heavier turn, presumably due to the absence of charismatic former-frontman Roth. But really, barring , the split has gone pretty much downhill for both Roth and Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen can still produce a lot of cool riffs and scorching guitar solos, but it falls short of the awe-inspiring work in

Instead sticking to the original plan of releasing a two-disc setone of material with original frontman David Lee Roth, and the other with his 11-year replacement Sammy Hagarthe band opted for a single CD chronicling their entire career. For the previously uninitiated, it's a golden introduction to a band that changed the face of '80s hard rock. Guitar-blazing old tracks like "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," and "Dance the Night Away" segue into more commercial numbers like "Jump" and "Panama" from 1984. These in turn, set the stage for Hagar's slicker, more polished vocals on "Right Now" and "How Do I Know When It's Love." But while newcomers will be thrilled with the delights within, old fans will probably find little of use, since the two highly touted new tracks with Roth are pretty disposable. Jon Wiederhorn

Extractions: Welcome to Mean Street - The Van Halen Fanlisting. Brothers Alex and Edward Van Halen moved to the U.S. from the Netherlands in '67; there, father was a semi-pro woodwind player. Both were schooled on classical piano, but got the rock bug in America. At first, Alex played guitar and Eddie drums, but they hit a stride upon trading instruments. They formed Mammoth and were joined by outgoing singer David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony. Soon, they changed their name to Van Halen because, as Roth claimed, "it sounded heavy like a German tank." By '76 they were a popular Southern California bar band. Kiss's Gene Simmons backed a demo tape and with the help of his recommendation, they were signed to Warners. Their debut took off immediately thanks to a huge sound, Roth's outrageous personality and vocal style and the brothers' considerable virtuosity. It's no exaggeration to cite Eddie as the most imitated guitarist of his generation. The hits kept coming: Their sixth LP, 1984, hit No. 2 in the Billboard charts with four hit singles, yet it was the last with Roth, who began a solo career. The band successfully carried on with vocalist Sammy Hagar, releasing five straight multi-platinum records. What is a fanlisting? Simply a list of fans grouped together in an organized fashion.
