     Extractions: La versione inedita di Ridley Scott Ridley Scott era già intervenuto in maniera simile su "Blade Runner", diversi anni fa. E in quel caso, al di là degli imprescindibili risvolti commerciali insiti in simili operazioni, si era trattato comunque di un atto quasi dovuto da parte dell'autore nei riguardi di un'opera che, rivisitata mediante l'innesto di quel finale che egli avrebbe preferito in luogo di quello - più "vendibile" - imposto poi dai produttori nel montaggio definitivo, ha assunto una valenza filmica superiore a quella che l' ending originale le aveva consentito di guadagnare. Questa volta il lavoro di "rifinitura" è toccato nientemeno che ad "Alien" anche se, nell'occasione, pur operando ritocchi apprezzabili, non è stato tale da modificare il clima originario del film, che è rimasto pressoché immutato. Il cargo spaziale "Nostromo", di ritorno da una missione, intercetta un segnale che inizialmente viene inteso come un SOS proveniente da un vicino pianeta. Mentre parte dell'equipaggio scende sul posto ad indagare, gli ufficiali rimasti a bordo scoprono che la presunta richiesta di soccorso in realtà voleva essere un'avvertimento. Nel frattempo però, una colonia di organismi sconosciuti era già stata imprudentemente avvicinata, e l'avvento dell'alieno, a quel punto, era già divenuto inevitabile.

Se educó en el West Hartpool College of Art y estudió Arte y Cine en el Royal College of Art de Londres. Tras sus estudios, comenzó a trabajar como diseñador de decorados para la BBC. A mediados de los años 60 empezó a dirigir programas de televisión de la BBC pero muy pronto se lanzó como autónomo a dirigir anuncios publicitarios. Aún hoy es dueño de una agencia de publicidad. En 1964 se casó con Felicity Heywood, de la que nacieron dos hijos, uno de ellos es el director Jake Scott, nacido en 1965. Divorciado, volvió a casarse con Sandy Watson en 1979. L'evoluzione robotica è giunta alla creazione di esseri virtualmente identici a quelli umani, denominati Replicanti: copie degli esseri umani in ogni senso, fatta eccezione per le emozioni. I Replicanti sono più forti e agili degli umani, e gli sono almeno pari in intelligenza, ma vengono usati per lavori di fatica nelle colonie extra-mondo. In seguito ad un ammutinamento, la loro presenza sulla Terra è stata dichiarata illegale, e le squadre speciali della polizia - i Blade Runner - hanno l'ordine di sparare per uccidere. Ma quando spari ad un Replicante non lo stai uccidendo, lo stai "ritirando". Rick Deckard, "ex poliziotto, ex cacciatore di replicanti, ex killer", viene convinto a tornare in servizio come Blade Runner per dare la caccia a quattro pericolosi Replicanti appena scappati sulla Terra da una colonia extra-mondo. Aveva lasciato la polizia per smettere di uccidere, ma dare la caccia ai replicanti è meglio che diventare una loro preda... La sceneggiatura di Hampton Fancher e David Webb Peoples riesce a rendere perfettamente credibile l'ambientazione, cosa che si ripercuote positivamente sull'efficacia dei personaggi e del concetto di "Replicante". Pur con qualche eccesso filosofico, la commistione tra ambientazione fantascientifica e impianto poliziesco funziona egregiamente, anche se va detto che buona parte della suggestione tipica da film noir che "Blade Runner" sa ricreare deriva dall'uso della voce narrante in stile hard-boiled, che Scott non voleva. Il finale imposto dalla produzione (con sequenze prese da "Shining") è decisamente fuori luogo, ma quello della versione "director's cut" non è poi molto meglio.
