Extractions: Architect George Gilbert Scott Great Buildings Search Advanced Search Buildings ... Store Works Biography George Gilbert Scott (b. Gawcott, England 1811; d. London, England 1878) George Scott was born in Gawcott, England in 1811. Articled to James Edmeston from 1827 to 1831, he formed a partnership with W. B. Moffat that lasted from 1834 to 1845. Dedicated to the historic preservation of medieval buildings, Scott helped restore many churches throughout Europe. Because Scott displayed unusual thoroughness in his restorations and because he used conjecture to make many of the restorations, he often worked in opposition to many preservationists of his day. Scott designed most of his buildings in a Gothic manner that conflicted with contemporary ideas on appropriate architecture. He felt that Gothic design suited most modern building types and materials. A proponent of the Ecclesiological principles of church design, he developed the ability to blend elements from disparate architectural sources. Scott won a Royal Gold Medal in 1859 and was knighted in 1872. He died in London, England in 1878.

Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878) A brief guide to the life and work of the Victorian architect Sir george Gilbert scott, with emphasis on his work in Cumbria. http://www.visitcumbria.com/ggscott.htm
Extractions: Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878) was born in Gawcott, Buckinghamshire. He started in architecture by designing gaols and workhouses, but later studied French Gothic Cathedrals and Churches, being much influenced by the ideas of Augustus Welby Pugin . He represented the quintessence of High Victorian Gothic architecture, and was responsible for an immense amount of such work. He was concerned with the creation, restoration and alteration of some 730 buildings. His first work was The Royal Wanstead School, Essex, formerly an Orphan Asylum. One year later, he built St Giles Church, Camberwell (1841-3). His restorations began with renovations of Ely Cathedral in 1847 and included Westminster Abbey (where he was made surveyor in 1849, and worked on the north front and the chapter house). He restored many other cathedrals and churches. Some of his best work is St Giles' Church in Camberwell, The Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens, the Midland Railway Terminus Hotel at St Pancras and the Foreign Office in Whitehall, all in London. Scott died in London in 1878, and is buried in Westminster Abbey.

Extractions: Web posted at: 8:00 a.m. EST From Correspondent Cynthia Tornquist NEW YORK (CNN) George C. Scott was not fully recovered from the illness that delayed the Broadway opening of "Inherit the Wind" but he is back on his feet and center stage with co-star Charles Durning Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the play is a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes Monkey trial in which a Tennessee teacher is tried for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution. The production is seen as the best example of the kind of work that the National Actors Theater has been striving to present since its creation in 1991. But for theater founder, actor-director Tony Randall , the play has a more personal connection, one that goes back to 1955 when he appeared in the original Broadway version "Forty years ago, when we did the play and all that time, I've wanted to do this again," Randall says. "Tony had been asking me to do it for a long time and I just never had an opportunity until now," Scott says. But when Scott, 68, arrived for rehearsals in February he was ill, reportedly having caught the flu while shooting a CBS-TV movie. The role required Scott to appear in scenes in a Virginia coal mine.

Extractions: CNN Entertainment News Correspondent LOS ANGELES (CNN) Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott are as comfortable on a soundstage as they would be in their own living rooms and why not? Each has been acting for some 50 years. And the work they're focusing on now has been around almost that long, too. Their latest project is "Inherit the Wind." It's a serious script, another retelling of the Scopes "monkey trial" of 1925 what many would say is the true "trial of the century" in the United States. The story first was dramatized by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee in 1955, and given its first film treatment in 1960, with Gene Kelly and Spencer Tracy. But despite the work's church-state separation gravity, on the set of the new remake, it's a Tootsie Pop, family pets and cheering for the caterer to get into the cast picture.
