Scorsese volvió a la comedia con El rey de la comedia (1983) y ¡Jo, qué noche! (1985), antes de dirigir El color del dinero (1986), película con la que su protagonista, Paul Newman, consiguió el Oscar a la mejor interpretación masculina. En 1988 desató fuertes polémicas con el filme La última tentación de Cristo, basada en una novela de 1960 del autor griego Nicos Kazantzakis, en la que se muestra a Cristo como un hombre con conflictos humanos. En 1990 dirigió la película sobre la mafia Uno de los nuestros (protagonizada por De Niro), por la que fue nominado al Oscar a la mejor dirección y al mejor guión adaptado. Ha dirigido también El cabo del miedo (1991), con De Niro, basada en la genial película de Lee Thompson El cabo del terror (1962); La edad de la inocencia (1993), adaptación de la novela homónima de Edith Wharton; Casino (1995), de nuevo con De Niro en el papel protagonista, en la que retoma el mundo de la Mafia; Kundun (1997), historia del decimocuarto Dalai Lama, Al límite (1999), interpretada por Nicolas Cage, y Gangsters de Nueva York, interpretada por Daniel Day-Lewis.
