After spending a year in college he decided to take some time off to pursue his acting career and has not stopped working since. He made his television début in the NBC television movie-of-the-week Extreme Close-Up . His other televesion projects include Long Road Home and Stay the Night . He has guest-starred on popular television series China Beach Crime and Punishment Quantum Leap and The X-Files in which he played Lee Harvey Oswald. He has also appeared in a variety of films such as Mother Shortcut to Paradise and Prayer of the Rollerboys . His stage productions include the starring role in Being at Home with Claude which won him a Los Angeles Critics Circle Award. While Space: Above and Beyond wasn't his first science fiction work, it was the first full-time episodic work for the actor. Although he thought the pilot script was good, he wasn't crazy about the character of Nathan West and actually wanted the part of Cooper Hawkes, but Rodney Rowland had already been cast. Part of the reason why he wasn't attracted to the character early on was because he considered the character of West too soft. Although he was never happy with his character in the pilot, he was very happy with the story arcs that developed his character further as the series progressed.
