Search Classic Movies A Tribute to Roy Rogers "The King of the Cowboys" is dead at age 86. Roy Rogers passed away two days after the 4th of July, of congestive heart failure. His family was with him when he died, and he had been ill for some time. Born Leonard Slye, and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Roy learned to be a cowboy by working on a ranch in New Mexico. His first performing name was "Dick Weston," which he used as a member of the Sons of the Pioneers. He landed a movie role as a singing cowboy in 1938, and went on to star in radio and the movies, and later became the most popular TV cowboy of the 50s. With second wife Dale Evans, sidekick Pat Brady (with his Jeep named Nellybelle), his great horse Trigger, Dale's horse Buttermilk, and his German Shepard Bullet, he fought the bad guys every week in the modern West from his home base on the Double R Bar Ranch. He appeared in over 100 movies. Despite his public fame and great success in several business enterprises, Roy's private life was filled with tragedy, including the deaths of his first wife and three of his children. Extractions: at his museum in Victorville, CA Thanks to all who have left a message in my guest book. It's good to know that a lot of people feel the same way about Roy that I do. During one of my visits to the museum I was fortunate to meet Roy and talk to him a few minutes. His honesty and warmth flowed out to all who were there. This was in 1995 and Roy was not moving too well, really he shuffled along as opposed to walking, but he insisted on wearing his full cowboy outfit, including his boots, because "that is the way people expect to see Ole Roy." During this visit I had the picture shown above taken with Roy. When I asked if I could have my picture taken with him he said "sure, who is taking the picture?" I indicated where my wife was with the camera. Roy got a mischievous look in his eyes and said "Now what do I do, I'm new to this sort of thing." BUT, the memory I have of this visit that will always be with me is when an elderly lady pushing her blind husband in a wheel chair quietly told her husband that Roy was there. Her husband excitedly asked in a very loud voice, "where is he, where is Mr. Rogers?" Roy immediately went over, took the man's hand in his, and said "I'm right here my friend and I have plenty of time to talk with you." And he did just that. At that time, Roy's star shone for me even brighter than it had before.

Rogers began his life in Ohio as Leonard Slye and sang and traveled with the music group Sons of the Pioneers until his movie break in 1938 in "Under Western Stars". Gene Autry was scheduled to star in that film but dropped after contact disputes. It was Roy's big break. Roy Rogers' movies differed slightly than those of Gene Autry. Roy's movies were usually set in the 19th century while Gene incorporated automobiles and telephones and other 20th century props. But both actors used singing and music as an important part of the movie plot. Roy's horse, Trigger and dog Bullet were just as famous as the actor himself! In 1947, after the death of his first wife, Roy married Dale Evans and the two teamed up to create very successful careers in movies and television. At the time of Roy's death in 1998, the couple had been married 51 years. Hat . Roy Rogers wrote this about his hats: "The way I like it, my hat is peaked high in the front and slopes easy down toward the back. I guess a hatmaker could do it, but I like to take my own hat into the shower, get it good and steamy and shape it myself." This hat is a rare Roy Rogers hat because it is gray. It was made for his TV show "The Roy Rogers Show." On black and white TV, the hat would appear white.

Rogers was also a television star. His Roy Rogers show ran for 100 episodes in the 1950's. And he helped found Sons of the Pioneers, whose recording songs like "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Cool Water" remain country western favorites. Here he is with his wife, Dale Evans in the 1950 movie "Trigger Junior." Michael Stern, how did Roy Rogers become such a big star? MICHAEL STERN, Biographer: It wasn't by design. As a young child, growing up in extreme poverty, in Duck Run, Ohio. Roy's dream, his fondest wish as a boy was to become a dentist. That didn't happen, but he went West, as so many people did during the Great Depression. He picked fruit. He started singing with the Sons of the Pioneers. Movies went to sound, and suddenly they realized that westerns, which were all action and very little talk, if you added music to them, were a whole new wonderful genre, and Roy was perfectly suited for this new genre, and that's how he got into the movies in the first place.

His father worked in the insole department of the United States Shoe Co., and also grew vegetables. Young Leonard dreamed of becoming a dentist. The family was hit hard by the depression and headed west. Rogers said that The Grapes of Wrath could have been his family's biography. Once in California, he sang in cowboy music groups to supplement his meager income, and founded the seminal group "The Sons of the Pioneers." For a while he was known as "Cactus Mac." Roy Rogers' first commercial success was with the Sons of the Pioneers, but he was an even bigger pioneer in marketing, a champion merchandise wrangler. At the height of his success, in the mid-50s, his photo appeared on 2.5 billion boxes of Post cereals. Roy Rogers comics sold 25 million copies a year. More than 20 pages of the annual Sears catalog were dedicated to his merchandise. Products included lunch boxes, sheets, wallpaper, socks, ties, hats, watches, cut-out dolls, cap pistols, and similar bric-a-brac. Roy Rogers booked some $50 million a year in sales. By the late 50s Rogers had more than 2,000 fan clubs and more than 400 licensed products on the market. In 1955, Disney introduced the Davy Crockett Coonskin Cap, which heralded a $300 million Davy Crockett merchandise boom. Like Microsoft, Disney is evil, late, and more successful than the competition. This was one showdown Rogers didn't win.
