Extractions: Shirley's Writings Rochester in 1853 By Shirley Willard, Fulton County Historian (Rochester, Indiana, will celebrate its sesquicentennial Aug. 1-2, 2003. Rochester was founded in 1835, organized as a town in 1853 and incorporated as a city in 1910. Here is a look back to 1853 when the village of Rochester became a town. This was celebrated at the Rochester Centeinial in 1953.) Nobody living in Rochester in 1853 wrote a history of the town at that time, so we have to go to several sources to discover what the town was like when it first adopted the type of government known as a town, with an elected advisory board. Rochester did not incorporate as a city with a mayor until 1910. Fortunately, several of the "old settlers" were interviewed by Marguerite Miller and their memories were published 1909-1910 in the Rochester Republican, a local newspaper owned by her father, Albert Bitters. Let us enjoy some of those old reminisces now, from her book, Home Folks A Series of Stories by Old Settlers of Fulton County, Indiana. The first story, that of William A. Ward, is one of the best. He was born about 1831 and came as a baby in a horse-drawn wagon to Fulton County. There were only five white men living in what later became Rochester: William Lindsey, Joseph Truckey, Thomas Robb, DeClair - a half Frenchman, and "Friend" Johnson, who was the Indian gunsmith. Ward told of two stores in Rochester: Hollands and Moores. He told of two murders and a band of thieves and he named names! At the age of six, Ward was an eye-witness to the forced removal of the Potawatomi Indians, seeing them "driven like cattle" down Main Street. He tells how he wanted to go west with them and followed them a mile south of town where his mother caught up with him and made him return home. Ward told of the Indians burying their money (gold in an iron pot) that has never been found to this day!

(cheerfully now) comedians do," says Glen Cross, 26, of the sketch troupe, the Komic-Kazes. Yes, all those things that comedians do. Like drinking and hanging out and hanging out and drinking. The Komic- Kazes, who boast the worst name in the sketch scene, have been doing those "things" on and off for the last seven years. The troupe has had over 13 members, six of whom were women. Says Cross, "I didn't want to go to my grave not knowing what it was like with a woman." This Saturday (Aug. 26), the Komic-Kazes Glen Cross, Adam Reid, Terry McGurrin and two mystery members play the Rivoli. It's the first time the troupe has won the honor of playing a `money night.' The Komic-Kazes are also booked to play the television stage at this year's Comedy Slam, which is scheduled to take place during the last week of September at The Big Bop. Does this mean the Komic- Kazes have cracked the big league? Before we answer that, let's cast our minds back to last winter, when these self- same Komic-Kazes were broadcasting the news of a major New York City showcase for MTV, HBO, Broadway Video and the like.
