Extractions: By Gary Susman NEW YORK It wouldn't be hard to make fun of MTV VJ Matt Pinfield. His appearance (short, bald, likened even by his fans to Uncle Fester), his gravelly voice, his awkward hand gestures, his endless flow of obscure trivia all make him a rarity, not just on MTV but on television in general. So when the Bloodhound Gang parodied him last year in their video "Firewater Burn," he could easily have been offended. He wasn't. "I loved it actually," he admits from behind a desk at MTV's new Times Square headquarters. "I was sitting at a pizza parlor in New York City when [Bloodhound Gang lead singer] Jimmy Pop Ali handed me his demo. He told me he did an imitation of me. He started doing it in the pizza parlor, doing the Pixies' family tree. I was rolling on the floor, it was so funny. So when the video came in to MTV, I was almost anticipating a parody. He really got me down. He went to all the trouble of getting a bald cap. He was doing my nervous hand movements. I thought it was great. The sincerest form of flattery." In fact, Pinfield's shtick is so popular, he's now on the air often enough that they could rename the channel MattTV. Best known for interviewing bands as the host of the weekly alternative-rock showcase

Extractions: By Anthony Mariani Nov. 15, 2000 Matt Pinfield, the stocky, bald-headed broadcaster who established his reputation as the station's tough-looking savant and host of MTV's "120 Minutes" show, is starting to seem a lot more like one of those infomercial blowhards. Take a look at his new show, "Jimmy and Doug's Farmclub.com." He used to be gruff and monotone; now he's chipper and overflowing with niceness, his voice a couple of octaves higher. The guy is easy like Sunday morning when interviewing bands, tossing up softballs like "It's cool that you guys are back on the road/in the studio again" for Gwen Stefani or Dr. Dre to hit out of the infield. Pinfield left MTV last year to join "Jimmy and Doug's Farmclub.com" when it debuted earlier this year. The show is an hour-long music television show cablecast on the USA Network every Friday and Saturday night. It showcases videos and live performances by national talent and aspiring unsigned or indie label superstars, from Beck and Nelly to the Texas band ... And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead.

Extractions: With Matt Pinfield of MTV I'll always remember 1996 as the year I stopped listening to the radio. I turned that little switch on my clock radio from "wake to radio" to "wake to buzzer" so I could hear that nail-biting "Beeeeeeep. Beeeeeeep. Beeeeeeep," instead of Alanis' "You you you oughta knowow" blaring in my ears each and every morning. Best of all, when some bastard stole the antenna from my car, I couldn't have cared less. The only drawback was that I had to listen to static during tape changes as opposed to the grueling guitars of the flavor-of-the month alternative band. I'll also remember 1996 as the year I finally gave up on MTV. I know, I know, "I told you so." But I gave them the benefit of the doubt: Maybe they would remember what the "M" in MTV stood for. Surprisingly, they did, and decided to create the 24-hour music channel M2 for music and to use MTV for game shows more inane than VJ Daisy Fuentes, even on a good day. There were a few good records released last year. It's just hard to remember what they were. Everyone and his mother latched onto Beck's "Odelay," and rightfully so. A few new acts gained a good buzz like Garbage, The Cardigans and Kula Shaker, and veterans Screaming Trees.

Extractions: Memories of RH from 120 Minutes March 15, 2004 11:54 AM - Posted by dylan Think back, way way back, when MTV was cool. Remember seeing cool bands like The Butthole Surfers, Ween, and, ahem, Radiohead, that you'd never hear anywhere else? Remember when they'd run old Speed Racer cartoons at 1am? Remember when they actually played music videos, more than five of them at that? I do, and the downfall of MTV (and SPIN Magazine, which, I kid you not, was really really great like 12 years ago) signifies the absolute and utter destruction of my glorious youth. Anyway, I'm not alone, because Altmusictv.com has an article detailing these salad days, with a particular focus on a lovely show called 120 Minutes. Former hosts Matt Pinfield and Dave Kendall sat down to talk about their experiences on the show, and Matt mentioned Radiohead's performance on the show: Matt Pinfield: "We would sometimes tape literally as early as 7 or 8 in the morning. And you know what was an amazing thing? Radiohead came to record some live songs from The Bends, and they showed up at 9AM, and did "High and Dry" and "Street Spirit." It was impeccably beautiful. I can't believe Thom Yorke sounded so amazing at 9 in the morning. It was incredible!" Q: Speaking of Radiohead, what's your favorite Radiohead album?
