NASA Demos Space Net the fact that we ve established IP connectivity with a spacecraft opens a whole worldof options to spacecraft designers, said ronald parise, senior scientist http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2000/0501/tec-nasanet-05-01-00.asp

A recent demonstration using commercial off-the-shelf networking products and standard Internet Protocol (IP) to communicate with an orbiting satellite is the first step in designing space missions more quickly, more cheaply and smarter. Federal agencies such as NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Defense Department and the National Imagery and Mapping Administration are just a few that could benefit by communicating with spacecraft using the same standardized, low-cost equipment used for ground-based networking.

Extractions: first day ceremony programs and flown stamps In 1986, I was gifted with a copy of Michael Cassutt's Who's Who In Space: The First 25 Years, a collection of narrative biographies and photographs for every astronaut, cosmonaut and international space traveler who either flew or was selected to do so within the first quarter century of space exploration. That same year, I brought the book with me to an event where I met my first two astronauts, Deke Slayton and Charlie Walker. Both gentlemen signed near their entries, beginning a project I would continue with every astronaut I came into contact with since.

Extractions: >Alumni association, with your permission. During the first two minutes (while the solid rocket boosters are burning) there is a lot of low frequency vibration. It would be very loud but with your headset and helmet on you feel the noise more than hear it. The g-forces during that phase are about a constant 1.5 g's. Once the solids are gone at about 200,000ft altitude the ride gets very smooth. The acceleration starts to slowly increase to 3 g's and remains there for the remaining few minutes. At main engine cutoff you go from 3 g's to g's almost instantly! The whole ride takes about 8.5 minutes and wow what a ride!!

Extractions: Draft Day Chess This past weekend, I was doing what everyone else in the hockey world was doing. My eyes were shifting rapidly between the real-time internet postings of the NHL Entry Draft and the television coverage on ESPN2 while trying to stay current on the phone, which rang periodically through the day. It was basic off-season hockey fun. In case you haven't checked it out, the NHL's Entry Draft is a little bit like an NCAA tournament pool. Like the plethora of sheets that get passed around office coolers each spring, there are a few surprise actions instigated by teams, and still more decisions not to act that raise an eyebrow or two. There are usually a few trades, and by Sunday's draft end, it becomes time to sift through a team's depth chart, and figure out what might be done next. What was the day like for GM Doug Wilson, in his first draft since being named to the position? Well, as I expected, he did a lot of listening but no dealing when it came to his team's two first round selections. After all, this draft was too deep and too important for the team to peddle either pick. That was Good Decision Number 1.
