Extractions: Laura Nyro Singer, Songwriter, Muse This little site is dedicated to the memory of singer-songwriter Laura Nyro , who died as a result of ovarian cancer in April of 1997. She was only forty nine years old. She is survived by her father, her brother and her son. This is a small, personal site and the opinions found here are only mine, although my opinions have been so influenced by the insights and observations of other lovers of Laura Nyro's music, that I cannot now really distinguish and tell them apart anymore. As a result, I also dedicate this site to my friends in the Laura Nyro Conference over at Cafe Utne They tirelessly spread the gospel of Laura Nyro's wonderful music and it is to my own benefit that I am able to participate with them in helping to keep the flame of her music alive and burning bright. And When I Die , Three Dog Night do Eli's Comin ', Barbra Streisand do Stoney End or The Fifth Dimension do Wedding Bell Blues Sweet Blindness and Stoned Soul Picnic , then you have heard a little of her music. Very little, in fact, as her body of work is far more extensive than that of the hits other artists were able to have by recording her songs.

Extractions: (CNN) For a time in the late '60s and early '70s, Laura Nyro was probably the most successful songwriter in the world. The late singer's songs "Eli's Comin'," "And When I Die," "Stoned Soul Picnic," "Stoney End" were all over the radio, covered by artists ranging from Blood, Sweat and Tears to Barbra Streisand. The Fifth Dimension, in particular, built a good part of its career on covering Nyro's soul-gospel creations, taking one of them "Wedding Bell Blues" to No. 1 in 1969. On her own, Nyro didn't fare quite as well commercially, but still had the respect of the music business. Her albums "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession," "New York Tendaberry," "Christmas and the Beads of Sweat," and "Gonna Take a Miracle" sold erratically, but were critically praised for their innovative arrangements and Nyro's songwriting versatility.

Extractions: And a world to carry on As the day began to break on April 8 th , seven years ago, Laura passed on to join a choir in the universe. She had the voice of an Angel here, and I can only imagine how much joy she has experienced since then, in a realm where all is music and her gift would know no boundaries. A while back I discovered her demo recordings of two songs, one of which is And When I Die. Laura was just in her teens at the time of the writing and recording, a young singer-songwriter in search of a company to support her work. I was struck with the knowledge that the wishes she had expressed in that song, ever so many years ago were fully realized on that April dawn in 1997, and this is a comfort. Laura died in her beloved cottage with just large windows of glass between her and the surrounding trees and the water below.
