We hiked in to ingalls lake in a quick hour and a half, and after fumbling around trying to traverse the lake on the right, we decided to bivi earlier than expected. We laid out our bivi sacs and crawled in with our meager bivi clothes on. I brought a down jacket and long underwear, Ryan had extra fleece and a special wool hat. We froze our freaking butts off that night. After the alarm went off at 5:00 am, I checked my watch's temperature reading: 39 degrees. (and it had gotten warmer out) We had both slept awfully, with at most 2 hours of sleep. Soon we were hiking around the proper side of the lake (West), just 100 yards behind a party that had passed through our bivi the night before. At the edge of the lake we filled our water bottles, 3 Liters for me, and headed off on a traverse towards Stuart Pass. For this trip I had reluctantly brought my platypus"water-bag". The stupid hose kept leaking on me, and Ryan took many opportunities to tell me how much he didn't like em. He was laughing then, oh yes, until he ran out! There are climbers paths leading to Stuart pass, and we were soon at a trail junction on what is roughly the pass. Looking up on the North side of Stuart pass you see steep craggy slopes. We figured that this trail leading off the other side must be the path to Goat Pass. It's really well worn, isn't it After about 5 minutes we notice that the trail seems to be leading us waaaayy in the wrong direction, and that there are horse prints all around. Ug. Back up to the pass. From here we just stayed on the ridge crest, scrambling at times, until we were at the base of the West Ridge. The party we'd seen earlier in the morning was now starting up the West Ridge (My friend Greg's party, incidentally). From here the trail to Goat Pass was obvious, so we scrambled down and over boulderfields until reaching the sandy trails back up to the pass.

If anyone was wondering what that shaking feeling they had was in the first 30 minutes was, it was reality dropping in to catch a flick and tell us how it must have been. The cast of big names do credit to veterans of the Hell they suffered. Spielberg's genius cannot be praised enough for his brilliance in camera, special effects, and cast selection. On a personal note, I myself plan to join the Canadian Forces when I come of the legal age, and although I still plan to join, the only thing I kept thinking over and over during this film was "Jesus Christ, am I insane?" <"The Disgruntled Fat Historian" 01/02/00> What a mess. if the first 30 minutes were different more people would realize how truly awful this film is. The dialogue is dreadful. The acting is awful. What's even worse is how Damon chose to stay and not go home. I mean I bet soldiers would kill for a chance that Damon had. You suck Steven Spielberg. You're right up there with James Cameron (the devil) in writing terrible dialogue.

American racers seem to have fallen into mediocrity. There are hundreds of great drivers throughout the U.S. that could legitimately have a shot at F1, but none really try to get there. There are good movies that come around only once in a long time and Saving Private Ryan is one of those. I never write a review immediately after seeing a movie. I like to let the movie sink in for a day or two before setting out to write the review. After Saving Private Ryan, I'm sitting here two hours later writing the review. The movie is so unsettling that I feel that writing this review might help me come to grips with some of what happened during the film. Saving Private Ryan opens with a 30-minute sequence of the Omaha Beach D-Day invasion; this is a war sequence is so realistic and raw that I will be remember it for a long time. I must warn you now, Saving Private Ryan deserves its R-rating. This is not a movie for young children and if you are squeamish, you might want to cover your eyes here. The opening sequence is so extremely violent and realistic that it not only leaves you breathless, but it leaves you unnerved and senseless. I have not seen anything like this before and I doubt that I will see anything close anytime soon. Spielberg shoots this opening sequence with such intensity that I was left to wonder why all these unnecessary atrocities were committed. What we find out is that three brothers from the Ryan house were killed during the war, and all three telegrams are being delivered to the mother on the same day. However, there is a fourth still in the war. A group of eight soldiers led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) is sent out into the middle of the war to find Private James F. Ryan (Matt Damon) and bring him home to his family. The journey is long and hard, and about halfway through the film I was already reeling.

Directional effects are done extremely well during battle scenes and make a great demonstration disk for your Home Theater system. Video quality is fine but remember that the movie was filmed to have a "documentary" look to it and as such there is apparent film grain during quite a few scenes. The making of feature is interesting as well. - John The Army, in its infinite wisdom, does some really stupid things. The premise of the movie (and it's based on a true story) is that the Ryan family sent four brothers into the war, three of which were killed at or around D-Day. When a certain General learns of the fate of the Ryan brothers he decides that it would be "the decent thing" to send in troops to get the one remaining Ryan brother out of the war. OK, I'll concede that it's the decent thing to do, but what about the mothers of the men who were killed just to try and save Private Ryan? What about their families?

Extractions: Tom Hanks, in a beautifully subtle performance, is the leader of the squad. The rest of the top notch ensemble cast includes; Tom Sizemore (Heat), Ed Burns (Brothers McMullen), Adam Goldberg (T.V.'s Friends), and Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting). One reason these actors' comradery is so authentic is because the actors themselves actually attended boot camp before the film began shooting. The saving grace of Private Ryan is Spielberg who doesn't get much help from Robert Rodat's sometimes overly melodramatic script. The film's best scenes are the ones in which Spielberg is the driving force, such as the opening Normandy invasion sequence. These images are so terrifying and brutal that you won't be watching this film, you'll be experiencing it. Spielberg directs the battle sequences in this film with a ferocious energy that is unmatched. And he is again ably assisted by cinematographer Janusz Kaminski who also collaborated with him on the brilliant Schindler's List.
