Bright Lights Film Journal | Silent Film Articles on silent film. Subjects include Lon Chaney, asta nielsen, silent film studio Thanhouser Company, director Allan Dwan, and film The Passion of Joan of Arc. http://www.brightlightsfilm.com/silentfilm.html
Extractions: Silent studio Thanhouser Company produced over 1,000 titles between 1909 and 1917. Thanhouser, based in New Rochelle, New York, was known for its attempts to bring quality to an artform still in its creaky infancy. Edwin Thanhouser was the first American studio head who came from legitimate theater, which may explain the company's attention to detail, narrative verisimilitude, and the building of a stock company of the kind that existed in the theater. Subjects were extremely varied, from period melodramas, mysteries, and social reform films to horror movies and fairy tales.

Extractions: Events Germaine Dulac Retrospective of films and international Symposium 31 October - 3 November 2002 L'Invitation au voyage - Invitation to a Journey An event organised by the Kinothek Asta Nielsen in co-operation with the Kino im Deutschen Filmmuseum, schauspielfrankfurt and ZDF/ARTE The Kinothek Asta Nielsen invites you to a voyage of discovery into the word of Early Cinema. Starting with an Opening Soiree - a co-operation with ZDF/ARTE and the schauspielfrankfurt - on 31 October at 7 p.m. in the Grosse Haus of the Schauspiel we will revive the almost forgotten film oeuvre of French director Germaine Dulac (1882-1942) to present her films to the general public. As the first feminist film maker and temporary leader of the French Filmclub movement, Dulac - who was closely connected with French Surrealism - stands out as a key figure of the debates in film criticism and film theory in the 1920s. With her articles on film history she contributed significantly to the tradition of the first French Avantgarde. Dulac's substantial body of work, which is kept by the Bibliothèque du Film (BiFi) in Paris, has been reconstructed, some of her forgotten films have been discovered and restored. Two of these films, La Belle Dame sans Merci (1920) and L'Invitation au Voyage (1927) will be screened with live music on 31 October 2002 in the schauspielfrankfurt. La Belle Dame sans Merci will be shown in the internationally acclaimed version by Maud Nelissen (piano: Maud Nelissen; vocals: Wynanda Zeewarder (soprano) and Willem Korteling (tenor)), which has for example been performed in 1997 at the festival Il cinema Ritrovato in Bologna. For L'Invitation au Voyage, the ZDF/ARTE have commissioned Catherine Milliken, Frankfurt, with a musical score. The world premiere of this new film music for six instrumental soloists will take place on October 31, 2002 in the schauspielfrankfurt.
