So goes the future according to Rob Nash, creator of Junior Blues and Senioritis , the last two installments of his sweet and terrifically funny "Holy Cross Quadrilogy" about the angst and agonies of adolescents, loosely based on the writer's own experiences at Strake Jesuit but set in wildly fluctuating time periods. Now at Bienvenue Theatre, these two one-acts close a long chapter in the lives of George, Ben and Johnny, three "nonconforming" high school boys (does such an animal exist?) who have acquired, over the years, a whole slew of adoring fans. I overheard one opening-night zealot coo that she'd driven all the way from Austin to catch the show.

If so, you probably saw him on VH1, HBO or the many Pride Parades that he rocked with his jokes. Yes, it is Rob Nash (also known to many of us Muslims as "Salim.") When I first interacted with brother Salim, it was through an internet group for queer Sufis. I remember thinking, "This guy is funny." Everything he said was funny. Talking on the phone with him, even his language is funny. I think it is a gift. A gift only God can give. You either have it or don't. And he certainly has it. But beyond his jokes lies a man who deeply cares about social change, who thinks for himself and successfully gets his message across with laugh-out-funny performances. Critics everywhere loved his "Holy Cross Sucks!" show, a madly funny 30-character saga about three youths going through a four year Jesuit high school in Texas all played by Nash. That's not a problem, actually not a problem at all but I thought it would be a rollicking laff fest, because I'm previously unfamiliar with Rob Nash's work except for what I've heard on the radio, and what I heard on the radio was a hilarious, multivoiced story that was set in the more guffaw-provoking arena of pure farce. Rob Nash's Holy Cross cast doing Romeo and Juliet is something else again. Nash, you should know, is one talented man. In most of the shows he's done, the emphasis falls equally on both words: "talented" and "one." Nash brings to life on stage, just by himself, an entire community of diverse people and draws the audience into a world as well fleshed-out as the nascent stages (at least) of Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon. Well, there are no Norwegian bachelor farmers here, but there are: students in a Catholic school in Houston, the clergical faculty and staff of that school, and the families and surrounding neighborhoods inhabited by those Holy Crossers. The sexual orientation and escapades of these characters is often touched on, and they fall into four distinct categories: gay, straight, closeted, and confused. Well, Hollywood wasn't exactly clamoring for Nash's inventive work, even though he was doing his best to make it in Los Angeles. So rather than wait for the studios to come to their senses, Nash set out to create four stage plays, one for each year of high school, to test his writing skills and abilities as a performer. (He would play all the characters dozens of them in each play.) Earlier this year, he completed Junior Blues , which he premiered at the Vortex, as he did with Freshman Year Sucks! and Sophomore Slump . Now comes Senioritis , the last installment of his tale of three friends wending their way from youth to adulthood in the morass of emotions and bodily fluids that is a typical high school. "I based the adventures of Ben, George, and Johnny on me and two of my best friends from high school," says Nash. "We were just jumping-off points. In First City , Gary Nash argues that historical memory reflects the concerns and conflicts of the present as much as the reality of the past. In particular, the nineteenth-century leaders of the citys major historical institutions, dismayed by rapid social, economic, and cultural change, invented and idolized a harmonious, heroic, and relatively homogenous past embodied by William Penn and the heroes of the Revolution. In preserving the memory of these founders, the leaders of these organizations most notably the American Philosophical Society, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Library Company of Philadelphia hoped to provide a model of virtue and order for their own troubled times. Their efforts, however, constantly ran up against alternative narratives of the past championed by the very people whose disorderly behavior they wished to correct. Nashs chapters follow a roughly chronological structure, beginning with the citys founding and following its many transformations: into a major commercial seaport in the colonial period, a political center during the Revolution, and an industrial metropolis in the nineteenth century. Each chapter both chronicles significant developments during the relevant time period and discusses how Philadelphians especially the leaders of the major historical institutions chose to commemorate some pieces of that history while ignoring others.
