Extractions: Starring: Julianne Moore, Ralph Fiennes, Stephen Rea Review Summary In war-torn 1939 England, writer Maurice Bendrix (Fiennes) meets Sarah Miles (Moore) who is married to Henry (Rea), a man she loves but shares no intimacy with. The two are immediately attracted to one another and embark on a torrid affair. Then one day Sarah mysteriously and abruptly walks out of Maurice's life. Two years later Maurice happens upon Henry who confides his suspicions of Sarah's infidelity. Maurice, wanting to understand the truth of what really happened between them, agrees to help and starts his own investigation. Graham Greene's fairly autobiographical novel was first filmed in 1955 starring Deborah Kerr and Van Johnson. In 1999 British writer-director Neil Jordan (Mona Lisa, The Crying Game) released this visually dark, gloomy, but gorgeous version. Maurice Bendix (Fiennes) is a young writer who has a passionate affair during the Second World War with Sarah Miles (Moore), who is married to Henry. The film opens in 1946 when Maurice runs into Henry and wonders why Sarah broke off the affair so suddenly. He has her tailed by a private detective, and his obsession with her re-blossoms. Eventually we learn that during a German bombing raid which left Maurice severely injured, Sarah prayed to God to spare her lover if she will give him up. Fiennes and Moore are both superb, and Stephen Rea nicely does the stuffy, cuckolded husband who is sensitive enough to realize what's going on. This rather old-fashioned tale may be too slow for many viewers, but it's richly and beautifully done.

Extractions: Alberto Cassani, 2 Settembre 2002 Lontano dal Paradiso di Todd Haynes Per apprezzare "Lontano dal Paradiso" è molto importante che ci si dimentichi il nome del regista. Todd Haynes è infatti stato il regista dell'irriverente "Velvet Goldmine", oltre che degli apprezzati "Poison" e "Safe". Anche questa volta le premesse erano quelle di un film "contro", almeno nelle parole con cui Haynes ha presentato la sua opera al Festival di Venezia del 2002. Invece "Far from Heaven" è un film degli anni '50 dall'inizio alla fine, e non solo come scelta stilistica. La sceneggiatura (dello stesso Haynes) mette in bocca ai personaggi dei dialoghi divertenti, a tratti pungenti, ma mai davvero cattivi; non si assiste mai ad una vera satira sociale, come probabilmente era nelle intenzioni del regista. La storia è anzi un po' (tanto) prevedibile e l'unica aggiunta rispetto al classico film del periodo è il tema dell'omosessualità, trattato comunque in modo che sembra piuttosto edulcorato rispetto alle pellicole precedenti di Haynes. All'inizio, l'aria di buonismo assoluto ricorda molto quella del telefilm " Pleasantville " in cui i giovani Tobey Maguire e Reese Witherspoon si ritrovano nell'omonimo film di Gary Ross, e questo rischia di impedire allo spettatore di calarsi completamente nell'universo filmico immaginato da Haynes, tant'è che se non c'è interesse nel 'cosa succede adesso', la confezione esageratamente finta finisce per infastidire.
