    Extractions: The Father Of Bluegrass William Smith Monroe was born September 13, 1911 and grew up on his family's 650 acre farm just outside Rosine, Kentucky, where his father, James "Buck" Monroe, farmed, operated a sawmill and mined coal; his mother, Malissa Vandiver Monroe, raised poultry and tended to her husband and eight children. Of the six Monroe boys, Bill was the youngest, eight years the junior of his nearest sibling, Charlie, and between the sizable age gap between him and the rest of his brothers and sisters, and the fact that his extremely poor eyesight prevented him from playing most sports (especially his favorite, baseball), Bill spent a considerable amount of time on his own. Quite early on, he became fascinated by the music which abounded in the Monroe home - the old-time ballads sung by his accordion-playing mother, and the wonderful fiddle tunes he heard whenever Malissa's brother Pendleton would come by for a visit. Bill loved the sound of the fiddle and longed to learn how to play it, but that was his brother Birch's instrument. Guitar was his next choice, but Charlie was the guitarist in the family. That left Bill with the only other stringed instrument in the house - a mandolin. If he learned it, he figured, at least he could play along Charlie and Birch. And so, at age ten, he began to teach himself, picking out melodies he heard on the fiddle and learning to keep a rhythm. As he got better, Charlie let him play his guitar, and it was on that guitar that Bill made his first public appearances when he was barely a teenager, accompanying Uncle Pen at square dances around the country and sharing in the sheer joy that his uncle got out of entertaining.

Reilly Years later, when I was more of a master of Monroe's chosen instrument, I was on the bus with Bill and, again, had my mandolin. But I was playing tunes for him, now. I played "Bill's Dream" and a far way look came into his eyes. He said that he hadn't hear d that tune in years and asked me if he had ever told me the story about that tune. Bill then proceeded to tell me the story behind the writing of the tune; he had had a dream one night that one of his hunting dogs had fallen into an old dry well on the farm. The next day, one of the dogs did fall into a well and Bill wrote the tune to remember the event. These events are some the highlights of my relationship with Bill Monroe. I have had the opportunity to play with him on stage, as well as off-stage. Several times, he exposed the fierce, driving force of his teaching to me, putting his mandolin in my face and playing a passage until I got it right. It was as if I had been locked in his grip (and his grip is another tale) and held hostage to his musical vision. Monroe's musical legacy will be felt wherever the fiddle and banjo get together with the guitar and bass, wherever the mandolin beats out the stark, powerful outlines of Monroe's music.

Brother Charlie was next youngest, having been born eight years earlier. This gap, coupled with Bill's poor eyesight, inhibited the youngest son from many of the usual play activities and gave him an introverted nature which carried through into later life. Aside from his musical family, one of Monroe's early influences was a black musician from Rosine, Arnold Schultz. Bill would gig with him and rated him a fine musician with an unrivalled feel for the blues. At this time he also started to hear gramophone records featuring such performers as Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers. In 1934, Radio WLS in Chicago, for whom the three brothers (Birch on fiddle, Charlie on guitar, and Bill on mandolin) had been working on a semi-professional basis, offered them full-time employment. Birch decided to give up music, but Charlie and Bill reforemed as the Monroe Brothers. In 1938, they went their separate ways. Bill formed the Kentuckians and moved to Radio KARK, Atlanta Georgia, where the first of the Blue Grass Boys line-ups was evolved. Bill also began to sing lead and to take mandolin solos rather than just remaining part of the general sound. In 1939, he auditioned for the Opry and George Hay was impressed enough to sign him. By 1945, Monroe's style had undergone several changes. Most notable was the addition of Earl Scruggs, with a driving banjo style, putting the final, distinctive seal on Monroe's bluegrass sound. Flatt and Scruggs remained with Bill until 1948. Among Monroe's best known songs from the period is "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Included here is another of Monroe's hits: "I'm Going Back to Old Kentucky."

For more than half a century, he shaped bluegrass with his forceful mandolin playing; high, lonesome singing; and mastery of his band, the Blue Grass Boys. In doing so, he gave older country sounds new life; gave the mandolin a new role as a lead instrument in country, pop, and rock; and set standards for musicians as diverse as the Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley, George Jones, and rock star Jerry Garcia. William Smith Monroe was the youngest of eight children born to of James Buchanan “Buck” Monroe, a prosperous farmer who also ran timber and mining operations, and Melissa Monroe, who kept house and helped pass along dance steps and British-American folksongs to her children. Other musical influences of Bill’s youth include the old-time fiddling of his uncle Pendleton “Uncle Pen” Vandiver and the bluesy guitar playing of Arnold Shultz, a black musician with whom Bill and Uncle Pen sometimes worked local dances. Monroe lost both his parents by the age of sixteen, and subsequently he followed some of his brothers north to the Chicago area, where he labored in a Sinclair Oil refinery, performed as a square dancer on Chicago’s WLS National Barn Dance, and sang and played mandolin with brothers Charlie (who played guitar) and Birch (who fiddled) on local radio. Birch soon left the trio, and Bill and Charlie decided to pursue music full time as the Monroe Brothers, first gaining exposure on stations in Iowa and Nebraska.

If you would, the time to act is NOW, and all you have to do is to write and mail a letter. Each year, the United States Postal Service considers the issuance of approximately 25 commemorative postage stamps. Under its guidelines , the honoree must have been deceased for at least 10 years, which in Bill Monroe's case will be September 9, 2006. The 95th anniversary of his birth, September 13, 2006, which is only 4 days later, would be a logical date for the issuance of the stamp. The guidelines further recommend that the process be started 3 years before the issuance year, which is 2003. The first step is for a citizens' committee to select, and narrow down to approximately 25, the worthy nominees for each year. This they do by considering letters, cards, petitions, etc., sent to them by the public at large. After that, the committee considers art work and other details for the stamp. Because Bill Monroe's music is appreciated worldwide, nominations from outside the USA would be very appropriate.
