Extractions: You are here: Homepage Writing QiYE main QiYE article list Updated here 1999.06.20 It's time to revisit that multitalented vegan heterosexualist musician dude, Moby. After praising his album Everything is Wrong a few months ago, I would later enjoy a superexclusive interviewette with the thoughtful, matter-of-fact lad, whose teeth look much shinier in person than in those dreadful television interviews. Everything is Wrong The album features a handful of session singer(ette)s and Moby's own trademark bellowing. "I guess I have a pretty broad view (1) of singing, (2) of pop music," explains Moby in a typical text-aware '90s sentence. (We're the first generation that talks in parentheses.) "You know when you're young, if you had to go to church, there's always some old guy standing behind you sort of mouthing the words? Everyone else is singing tunefully, and behind you [it's] 'On-ward-Chris-tian-sol-diers-mar-ching....' That's me. I can't do the tuneful thing. So I'm forced to scream and shout and vocalize. "I love female vocals. I have my sort of half-baked semi-adolescent theory that the first sound any human being ever hears is a woman passionately vocalizing, unless of course your mother was anaesthetized when she gave birth to you.... I think it sets a really powerful precedent for female vocals in our brains."

Extractions: Moby Dick Moby Dick is the umbrella for a variety of projects along the subject of ubiquitous computing and wireless communication . This work is enabling a new generation mobile systems, in which efficiency plays the most crucial role. Currently the research themes have focussed on: Moby Dick is a project of the Embedded Systems group within the Department of Computer Science of the University of Twente , and collaborates extensively with other universities and industry. We always have several master assignments ("D-opdrachten") and internships ("stages") available in the areas mentioned above. The Moby Dick project has been a joint European project (Esprit Long Term Research 20422) to develop and define the architecture of a new generation of mobile handheld computers. The design challenges lie primarily in the creation of a single architecture that allows the integration of security functions (e.g. payment), externally offered services (e.g. airline ticket reservation), personality (i.e. these devices know what their owners want), and communication (mobile internet terminal).

Extractions: When he started, Moby seemed like THE star of the whole techno movement. An ace DJ/mixer/creator and unashamedly upfront in his performances and his social/political views, he stood far out ahead of a lot of bedroom recluses who could barely show their faces in public. He 'blew' his reputation among all the uptight purists when he came out with Everything Is Wrong and then Animal Rights where he supposedly 'abandoned techno.' He didn't of course- because he committed the 'sin' of showing all sides of his music, people thought that he was giving up on dance music. Anyone who listens to his CD's will find it still there (along with ferocious rock tunes) and especially in his side projects such as Voodoo Child. Despite the detractors, he's still a techno pioneer who's probably got people mad because (like a lot of creative musicians before him) he insists on stretching the music. PSF: You started studying music in '76? Well, I first started playing instruments when I was nine, around '74 or '75.

Extractions: hordes of techno artists and fans for diluting and trivializing the form. In either case, Moby was one of the most important dance music figures of the early '90s, helping bring the music to a mainstream audience both in England and in America. Moby fused rapid disco beats with heavy distorted guitars, punk rhythms, and detailed productions that drew equally from pop, dance, and movie soundtracks. Not only did his music differ from both the cool surface textures of ambient music and the hedonistic world of house music, but so did his lifestyle; Moby was infamous for his devout, radical Christian beliefs, as well as his environmental and vegan activism. "Go" became a British Top Ten hit in 1991, establishing him as one of the premier techno producers. By the time he came to the attention of American record critics with 1995's Everything Is Wrong, his following from the early '90s had begun to erode, particularly in Britain. Nevertheless, he remained one of the most recognizable figures within techno; after he abandoned the music for guitar rock with 1996's Animal Rights, he returned to a heavy electronic base with 1997's I Like to Score and 1999's Play, the latter of which made him a genuine breakout pop star.

Extractions: I think the problem with seeing Moby this time around is that Moby is almost like performance art, and in being performance art it is probably better appreciated in a smaller setting with those who can truly soak it in. It's really hard to soak in performance art when the performer is on this giant stage in front of tens of thousands of people, many of whom can't appreciate it. I like Moby, and three years ago when he was on the side stage I could appreciate the art that is Moby. This time the art was lost in a cavern that would be the pavilion. I'm sure some people loved his set, but not me this time. Maybe I just need to see him in a place with less distractions. Next Up: Travis

He wrote articles on weighty topics for national magazines, and a book, "Confessions of a Secret Service Agent." But after meeting Joanna Molloy, a fifth-generation New Yorker, Rush soon straightened out his life and began writing a gossip column with her. The couple, who have been married since 1992, have a little Rush. Email: Punk the prez? Moby's anti-Bush tricks One of Sen. John Kerry 's celebrity supporters is ready to pull out all the stops to get him elected. Republicans are shrieking over a suggestion by rocker Moby that Democrats spread gossip about President Bush on the Internet. "No one's talking about how to keep the other side home on Election Day," Moby tells us. "It's a lot easier than you think and it doesn't cost that much. This election can be won by 200,000 votes." Moby suggests that it's possible to seed doubt among Bush's far-right supporters on the Web.

"I was outraged," Moby told me. "Everyone knows that Margaret's comedy is very irreverent and Lenny Bruce-style confrontational, and Matt Drudge took it out of context and exposed her to some really irresponsible and vile reactions." "That's absurd," Drudge responded. He pointed out that the posts on drudgereport.com had clearly identified Cho as a "comedian" and set the scene for her profanity-laced remarks, which he published at length under the headline "RAW RAGE AT BUSH DURING MOVEON.ORG AWARDS."
