Extractions: The Band Anyone who's followed Rick Springfield long enough knows how important his back up band is to maintaining a smooth, upbeat performance. The band Rick has assembled for this year's tour have years of musicianship to back them up. While you will note that most of them are new faces, they assured us that they have plenty of experience to merit them this job. The band members were chosen by audition prior to the tour. And can we say that they're all just a really nice bunch of guys who will add greatly to your enjoyment of Rick's show. Thanks to all of you guys...and to all of the guys behind the scenes who make it all come together at show time. David Whiston, guitar Dave Whiston, one of the "band guys", works with Rick on the weekends and has his own band, "V33" during the week. L.A. dwellers have been lucky enough to catch some of Dave's shows on his own, which showcase not only the astounding guitar ability that is on display at Rick shows, but also his wide range of styles and amazing voice. He also has played with the LA band KrunK in the past. Dave has been with Rick's tour since '98, but it is obvious that he has made his own musical niche within the group. Extractions: Dave Mobley During research for an article on The Incredible Robert Baldick to be included in The Illustrated Gazette , we came into contact with a lovely guy called Dave Mobley. Dave worked in television for over twenty-five years and kindly agreed to chat with Andrew Screen about his career. The accompanying photographs from Tom Grattan's War are kindly reprinted with Dave's permission. We are also working on an article on Tom Grattan's War which will include further behind-the-scenes photographs and contributions from Michael Howe (Tom Grattan himself). How did you become involved in the acting profession? Back in the sixties I was in amateur drama in Wolverhampton and ATV, our local commercial television station, put an advert in a local paper. They were looking for people involved in amateur performances for Crossroads . I wrote to them and shortly began to appear as an extra in Crossroads every fortnight getting five guineas for each time. That was the first thing I did in television. Youd spend a morning or afternoon filming an episode and when it was all over youd have to wait for five minutes before they came round with the wages in cash in brown envelopes. Then from there I wrote to the BBC and told them I was working for ATV, so I eventually started doing stuff for the BBC as well. I did some nice little speaking parts early on such programmes as The Newcomers . I thought I was well set-up for the future. For years I never had an agent, I just used to approach people myself or get things by word of mouth. Once you knew the casting agents they would often throw things your way.

Extractions: Basketball News Services In The Dallas Morning News today a story was run concerning the possibilities of who the Mavericks might opt to leave unprotected in the upcoming expansion draft that will provide the first roster for the new Charlotte Bobcats who begin play this fall. In one scenario it was mentioned that leaving Michael Finley or Antawn Jamison unprotected could be an option as the Bobcats wouldn't assume the remaining years and money of their contracts unless they were sure that they could trade them. What? If Charlotte were sure that they could trade them... why wouldn't Dallas know that? A move like this, letting a valuable asset go without compensation, would signal a death knell for the current structure of the franchise. We'd have to liken it to the loss of Sam Perkins with nothing in return which along with the abortive trade of Mark Aguirre without adequate return helped bring the last version of a Mavericks contender right down into the Western Conference dust. While we readily admit that a trade of Michael Finley or Antawn Jamison would not kill the team if the return were worth it, losing them in an expansion draft for nothing is just plain stupid.
