Extractions: A review from one who read (and loved!) the books first... Overall characterization, I thought, was superb. However... I did think the BBC's Titus a bit weak and I found their Steerpike a bit too obvious in his madness. Sessons (?) as Prunesquallor was a little on the chubby side, although his sister was acted beautifully! I thought the other parts were spot on. I did not mind the condensing of the material in length, and I agree with a previousreview that alludes to the third novel being a bit of a hotch-potch and basically unfilmable. What I did miss however was the sheer scale of the books. Everything in the books is almost absurdly exagerated; from the size of the castle (captured well) to the number of cats attending the Countess. The flood scenes were particularly disappointing, I felt. So much could have been done with CG, but most of the settings in the production are the result of model work. Finally, I felt the tone was a bit too helter-skelter (a mix between Alice in Wonderland and the Carry-On films perhaps?) I know this is a hard thing to put one's finger on, but I did feel that these eccentric and bizzare characters would have been better placed in a more calm and serene setting (as they are amidst Peake's amazing and opulent prose).
Extractions: I have very mixed feelings about this film. You can always tell when a book is adapted by people who love it, and I just didn't get that feeling from this one. Almost everything about it seemed a little too obvious, even camp at times. Obviously, the producers were aiming to make something more entertaining, as they probably thought a faithful rendition of Gormenghast would be 'gloomy', but this gave the whole thing a tendency towards melodrama. The sets were pretty, but looked as though they were trying too hard to be 'dreamlike', and everything looked far too clean and shiny, without a hint of decay anywhere, even though Gormenghast is supposed to be rotting away from the inside. It was all a bit too nice. The film was fairly well paced, considering the amount of plot they had to fit in. Richard Rodney Bennet's score, however, was beautiful.

Extractions: DVD Description The BBC's lavish, glowingly designed adapation of Mervyn Peake's eccentrically brilliant novels Titus Groan and Gormenghast is a triumph of casting. Ian Richardson's Lear-like depiction of the mad earl of a remote, vast, ritual-obsessed building is matched by the brutal pragmatism of Celia Imrie as his wife, the synchronised madness of Zoe Wanamaker and Lynsey Baxter as his twin sisters and the duplicitous charm of Jonathan Rhys-Meyer as Steerpike, the kitchen-boy determined to take over no matter how many deaths it costs. John Sessions is surprisingly touching as Prunesquallor, the family doctor who realises almost too late what Steerpike intends. It is always tricky to film a book dear to the hearts of its admirers: Wilson and his design team achieve a look rather more pre-Raphaelite than Peake's own illustrations, shabby velvets, garish sunlight and dank stone passages. The score by Richard Rodney Bennett is full of attractive surprisesfanfares and waltzes and apotheosesand John Tavener's choral additions are plausibly parts of the immemorial ritual of Gormenghast.
