Extractions: Photo of Malcolm X While in prison, Malcolm became a follower of Elijah Muhammad, the then leader of the Lost Found Nation of Islam, with branches in Detroit, Chicago and New York. Malcolm and Elijah Muhammad corresponded by mail while in prison. Malcolm's brothers Philbert and Reginald, visiting him in prison, convinced him to join the NOI and follow the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. Following NOI policies, Malcolm soon discarded his slave name, Little, and took the new name "X." He improved his knowledge base by reading extensively while in jail as well as studying from the Qu'ran and following strictly the Nation of Islam's dietary laws and moral codes. After his parole in 1952, Malcolm X undertook organizational work for the Nation of Islam under the guidance of Elijah Muhammad. As a minister Malcolm founded mosques in Boston, Philadelphia, Harlem and elsewhere and made the national expansion of the movement possible. Malcolm's ideology was expressed in his fiery orations, a newspaper column as well as radio and television interviews. In addition, he helped to found the NOI newspaper Muhammad Speaks . Malcolm was said to be the only black man who "could stop a race riot or start one." Due to his influences, NOI membership reached approximately 30'000 in 1963. In January 1958 he married Betty X, who was also a member of the Nation of Islam.

Malcolm was raised in a background of ethic awareness and dignity, but violence was sparkled by white racists trying to stop black people such as Rev. Little from preaching the black cause. As a young child, Malcolm, his parents, brothers, and sisters where shot at, burned out of their home, harassed, and threatened. After all the struggles and turmoil Malcolm's father was murdered by white racists when Malcolm was six. At age of fifteen, Malcolm dropped out of school and started running the streets. When he was twenty he was convicted of burglary and remain in prison until the age of twenty-seven. While he was in prison, he attempted to educate himself and during his time in prison, he learned about and joined the Nation of Islam, studying the teachings of Elijah Muhammed. He then lived in Los Angeles, where he died prematurely and unexpectedly at age 47 of pneumonia in 1935, a few days before the world premiere in Louisville of The Little Colonel on the silver screen. Craig ( Alexander Craig Culbertson, the Little Knight "Keith", right) w a s born April 18, 1890. As an adult he spent World War I in the balloon service headquartered in California. One of his friends, Douglass Fairbanks, Sr. once accompanied him up in a balloon and they both parachuted down together. Craig was later offered $1000 a week by a movie producer to play in films. He declined. He lived for much of the 1920's and 30's in New York, returning to Louisville by the 1940's, where he lived in Old Louisville's Puritan Apartments. He lived until 1973 (Age 83)

"I'd never seen anyone I ever spoke before more affected than this little white girl," he wrote (p. 286). This young woman had actually flown to New York after the speech and tracked down Malcolm at the Muslim restaurant he frequented in Harlem. His father, Earl Little, was an outspoken Baptist minister and avid supporter of Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Earl's civil rights activism prompted death threats from the white supremacist organization Black Legion, forcing the family to relocate twice before Malcolm's fourth birthday. Regardless of the Little's efforts to elude the Legion, in 1929 their Lansing, Michigan home was burned to the ground. Two years later, Earl's body was found lying across the town's trolley tracks. Police ruled both incidents as accidents, but the Little's were certain that members of the Black Legion were responsible. Louise suffered emotional breakdown several years after the death of her husband and was committed to a mental institution. Her children were split up amongst various foster homes and orphanages. Malcolm was a smart, focused student. He graduated from junior high at the top of his class. However, when a favorite teacher told Malcolm his dream of becoming a lawyer was "no realistic goal for a nigger," Malcolm lost interest in school. He dropped out, spent some time in Boston, Massachusetts working various odd jobs, and then traveled to Harlem, New York where he committed petty crimes. By 1942 Malcolm was coordinating various narcotics, prostitution and gambling rings.

After the Ku Klux Klan made threats against his father, the family moved to Lansing, Michigan. There, in the face of similar threats, he continued to urge blacks to take control of their lives. Malcolm's father was slain by the Klan-like Black Legionaries. Although he was found with his head crushed on one side and almost severed from his body, it was claimed he had committed suicide, and the family was denied his death benefit. Its disintegration quickly followed: welfare caseworkers sought to turn the children against each other and against their mother, from whom Malcolm, then six, was taken and placed in a foster home. Mrs. Little underwent a nervous breakdown from which she never recovered. After the eighth grade, Malcolm dropped out of school, headed for a life of crime. He wore zoot suits, straightened his hair to affect a white look, and became known as "Detroit Red." When twenty-one, he was sentenced to prison for burglary and there encountered the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam, popularly known as the Black Muslims. Muhammad's thesis that the white man is the devil with whom blacks cannot live had a strong impact on Malcolm. Turning to an ascetic way of life and reading widely, he began to overcome the degradation he had known. The argument that only blacks can cure the ills that afflict them confirmed for Malcolm the power of Muhammad's faith. He became a loyal disciple and adopted Xsymbolic of a stolen identityas his last name.

Earl Little followed Marcus Garvey, who instilled racial pride among masses of African Americans. Little died at a relatively young age, leaving his wife and eight children in extreme poverty. We would be so hungry, Malcolm X later reported, we were dizzy. Malcolm Little quit school at age fifteen and moved to Harlem where, he recalled, he became a thief and a drug dealer. At age twenty, Little entered prison and began to educate himself. When he learned about the Nation of Islam (or Black Muslims), led by Elijah Muhammad, he became an eager convert. He accepted Elijah Muhammads doctrine that white people were devils and rejoiced in a newfound racial identity. Leaving prison, he met Elijah Muhammad and replaced his own last name with X, which stands for the African name his ancestors lost when brought to the United States in slave ships. Malcolm X became an extremely popular evangelist for the Nation of Islam, recruiting new members and emphasizing African American pride. With brilliant fables, analogies, and turns of speech, he elevated the spirits of urban blacks trapped by segregation. He condemned hypocritical whites for preaching love and democracy while treating blacks as subhuman. In Message to the Grass Roots, he criticized African Americans for their submission to whites:
