Extractions: New York Times , May 21, 1927 Early in the morning on May 20, 1927 Charles A. Lindbergh took off in The Spirit of St. Louis from Roosevelt Field near New York City. Flying northeast along the coast, he was sighted later in the day flying over Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. From St. Johns, Newfoundland, he headed out over the Atlantic, using only a magnetic compass, his airspeed indicator, and luck to navigate toward Ireland. The flight had captured the imagination of the American public like few events in history. Citizens waited nervously by their radios, listening for news of the flight. When Lindbergh was seen crossing the Irish coast, the world cheered and eagerly anticipated his arrival in Paris. A frenzied crowd of more than 100,000 people gathered at Le Bourget Field to greet him. When he landed, less than 34 hours after his departure from New York, Lindbergh became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Extractions: Funded Grant Project Links Each year, The Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation provides grants of up to $10,580 (a symbolic amount representing the cost of the "Spirit of St. Louis") to men and women whose individual initiative and work in a wide spectrum of disciplines furthers the Lindberghs' vision of a balance between the advance of technology and the preservation of the natural/human environment. To date, 240 men and women in the United States and abroad have received more than $2.25 million to support their work. "The concept of a technology/nature balance, in which Charles and Anne Lindbergh so firmly believed, is now coming to the forefront as the answer to some of our global problems," said Clare Hallward, Chairman of the Lindbergh Foundation Grants Selection Committee. "The projects of our grant recipients have, since 1978, made significant contributions to such a balance. It was little more than a skeleton, the outline of a form in a dark, murky heap of rotting vegetation. The left leg was missing from the knee down, as were the left hand and right arm. Most of its organs were gone, scavenged by the animal life dwelling in the wooded area. It had decomposed so completely that it was not possible at first to determine whether it was a boy or a girl. The cause of death was a massive fracture of the skull. The body had been left to the elements for two to three months. Less than twenty-four hours later, and an hour after it had been identified as Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr. by its nurse and father, the remains were cremated. Always a "Lone Eagle," Lindbergh was a young airmail pilot in 1927 when he ordered and configured a small monoplane to his own design, christened it the Spirit of St. Louis, and then flew it from a rainy airstrip on Long Island to Paris nonstop in 33 1/2 hours. It was a feat that electrified the world and galvanized public acceptance of the airplane and commercial aviation. A month later, Aviation magazine observed: "Some deeds are marked by an inherent nobility that lifts them above other feats.... [But] there is something leveling, as well as elevating, about aerial adventure. The substitution of the pilot's helmet for the diplomat's high hat, the leather jacket for the frock coat, and the greasy mitten for the kid glove, appear[s] to breed mass camaraderie that tramples down political barriers and official punctilios between nations." Before his historic flight, Lindbergh had met Harry Guggenheim, another flyer and head of the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aviation. In 1932 Lindbergh's son was kidnapped and later found dead; the case became a public sensation. A German immigrant named Bruno Hauptmann was convicted of the crime and executed, though in the years since some have claimed he was wrongly accused. During 1939 and 1940 Lindbergh was a vocal opponent of American entry into World War II. However, after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor he joined the war effort, eventually flying 50 combat missions in the Pacific. His 1953 autobiography The Spirit of St. Louis won the Pulitzer Prize. In later years Lindbergh and his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, were well-known as advocates for environmental conservation. Extra credit : Lindbergh was followed by Amelia Earhart , the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean... In 2003, three German siblings claimed that DNA tests proved they were Lindbergh's children. Charles, an aviator, made the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean in the Spirit of St. Louis on May 20-21, 1927, flying from New York to Paris in 33 ½ hours. Called the "Lone Eagle" and "Lucky Lindy," he received a hero's welcome on his return and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. In the 1930s, Lindbergh became an outspoken isolationist and a member of the America First Committee prior to World War II. When war came, however, he flew combat missions in the Pacific and served as a technical expert on aeronautical matters. In 1954 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his autobiography, The Spirit of St. Louis . His wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, was a poet and essayist known for the sensitive nature of her works. Especially well known are her Gift from the Sea , a book of essays, and The Unicorn and Other Poems . She made many flights with her husband, which provided inspiration for several other books. The couple's early life was marred by the tragedy of their infant son's kidnapping and murder in 1932. The resulting sensational coverage of the trial forced the couple to seek refuge and privacy in Europe. They eventually settled in Hawaii.
