The Virgin Atlantic 747 which touched down at Basra International Airport Friday was also the first British passenger plane to land in Iraq for 13 years. It came hours after U.S. President George W. Bush declared that major hostilities were over in Iraq. ( Full Story Traveling on the plane was the airline's CEO, Richard Branson, who was greeted by dozens of British soldiers as he walked off the plane. Branson said the need for humanitarian aid was a priority in Iraq. The plane carried medical equipment, including incubators and defibrillators, as well as drugs for tuberculosis, blood pressure and heart disease, for hospitals in Basra and the southern region.

The identities of the others on board were not immediately known. There were no reports of injuries on the ground. Stewart, 42, was the owner of the plane. He finished a golf tournament in Florida Sunday and was scheduled to play in Texas this week. Flight controllers lost radio contact with the Learjet 35 during the morning, while the plane was over Florida. The aircraft with two pilots and three passengers went down about four hours later in north-central South Dakota. It crashed about two miles outside of Mina, a small town west of Aberdeen, in Edmunds County, police said.

The sixth fatality was a member of the New Zealand military, also acting as an observer. The Kuwaiti ministry of defense said seven other people on the bomb-testing range were wounded, including five Americans and two Kuwaitis. The accident happened about 7:30 p.m. (11:30 a.m. EST) during a joint Kuwaiti-U.S. air exercise near the Al Udairi firing range in a desert 31 miles south of Iraqi border, according to reports from Kuwait.
