The sentences come on top of heavy terms handed out to four people charged over a Falun Gong protest in which several demonstrators set themselves alight in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The Beijing Daily said the sentenced were among 45 in court over the past few days for organizing protests, making banners and printing leaflets in defiance of a government campaign against a movement it outlawed and declared an "evil cult" in 1999. The newspaper said the heaviest sentence was imposed on Zhang Hongli, jailed for 13 years on charges of renting a safe house, organizing the manufacture of banners and printing Falun Gong leaflets. Breaking his silence on the spiritual group, Tung told legislators on Thursday the sect would not be allowed to use religion as an excuse to exploit Hong Kong's freedoms, and undermine order and stability in the territory or mainland China. Tung's comments come as the Falun Gong step up their campaign in Hong Kong against a recent crackdown by the communist leadership in Beijing.
