Mr. Lewis, who served as Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) from 1995-1999, and former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations, will be responsible for ensuring follow-up to the African summit on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases held in Abuja, Nigeria, last April, and to next month's United Nations General Assembly special session on HIV/AIDS, as related to Africa. In June 1998, in addition to his United Nations duties, Mr. Lewis was appointed by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to an "International Panel of Eminent Personalities to Investigate the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda and the Surrounding Events". From 1984 through 1988, he was Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations. In the 1960s and 1970s, Stephen Lewis was an elected representative to the Ontario Legislature, and served as leader of the New Democratic Party. Mr. Lewis was born in Ottawa on 11 November 1937. He is married to Michele Landsberg, and they have three children Ilana, Avi and Jenny.

In UNDAUNTED COURAGE: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West Above all, however, UNDAUNTED COURAGE is a grand, colorful narrative of heart-stopping adventure and wondrous discovery, in which Ambrose conveys a vivid sense of what western North America was like before its settlement by European-Americans, as seen through the eyes of the first white man to explore it. As Ambrose puts it, "Lewis was able, through his writing, to take us, two centuries later, to the unexplored Missouri River, Rocky Mountain, and Oregon wilderness country of 1804-6, to meet Indian tribes untouched by European influence, to paint their portraits in words that capture the economic, political, and social conditions of their lives, along with their vibrancy, savagery, beliefs, habits, manners, and customs in a way never since surpassed and seldom matched. The complete mutual trust between Lewis and Clark, which Ambrose calls "one of the great friendships of all time, " was vital to the success of their enterprise. Together with a company of some thirty men, they voyaged down the Ohio, up the Mississippi to the rollicking frontier town of St. Louis, and then up the Missouri to an Indian settlement near what is now Bismarck, North Dakota, where they wintered. At last, as the spring of 1804 burst forth around them, they embarked on the most critical leg of their journey, venturing into what was then literally uncharted territory.

FRAZIER: I have to ask first, before we talk about the situation in Africa let's talk about the situation in the U.N., where a lot of member nations aren't really getting on board this train. LEWIS: There's obviously some significant discussion about parts of the document, the Declaration of Commitment, as it's called, Stephen (At issue is how to define those who are most vulnerable and at greatest risk of HIV infection). But as someone who has watched these multilateral negotiations over 15, 20 years, they have a dynamic of their own; there's always these linguistic labyrinths where a country struggles with the meanings of words. But ultimately, there is a consensus and ultimately, we will move the issue forward.

Extractions: template Stephen Lewis Sr. was born in Bullock County, Georgia around 1797 and died in 1863 in Hillsboro, Scott County, Mississippi. Parents: Siblings: Marriage: Children: Life and Times: Stephen was born in Georgia 14 years after the American Revolution. About the time of his birth there was widespread land speculation and fraud in Georgia. At one point, Georgia even ceded some of its land (which included the Mississippi territory) to the Federal Government in order to straighten out the mess. When Stephen was 15, the U.S. went to war with Great Britain (the War of 1812). The war directly affected Georgia in that Georgians used it as an excuse to try to take Florida from Spain. They were defeated and the troops soon had their hands full fighting the Northern Creek Indians who had sided with the British. The Creek Indians were defeated, in one instance by Andrew Jackson. The rest of the Indian tribes, even the ones that supported Georgia in the War of 1812 soon came under attack and were driven from Georgia by 1840. Stephen had left Georgia before this point however.
