That actor is none other than the extremely versatile Christopher Lee. While not as strongly associated with the Holmes character as his longtime friend and co-star Peter Cushing, Mr. Lee’s contributions are indeed uniquely significant. As with so many good things, it all started with Hammer Films… In late 1956, Hammer had begun work on their newest and most important project to date; namely the groundbreaking colour film The Curse of Frankenstein . This film would set the mold for the face of the company for the next 20 years and result in one of the greatest pairings in film history. Peter Cushing had already been cast as the monster-making Baron Frankenstein, but the role of the monster called for someone with “ …some knowledge and experience of movement and mime… ” Enter Christopher Lee. While a radically different characterization was given from the old Karloff version of the monster, Lee managed to create, without a doubt, a remarkable creature, filled with a pathos that would never again be equalled by Hammer in their follow-up series. Christopher Lee certainly demonstrated a superior ability at movement and mime in his performance, excelling this performance only in the even more demanding role of “The Mummy”. An incredible achievement, especially when one considers that Lee was covered by a ton of ghastly make-up. This was not because he had never appeared in a film. Quite on the contrary. His current record of having made the most films of any other living actor was helped along quite considerably by the number of times he was inserted as a one-line wonder in movies such as Hamlet and That Lady from 1947 onwards. It appears with the kind permission of editor Wayne Kinsey. The interview was published in September 2001. Christopher Lee and James Carreas at the presentation of the Queen's Award to Industry Hammer Films received in 1968. Terence Fisher once said of the first Dracula , 'Everything was right about that film' - and I think that sums up the reason for its success. It was a hell of a team - Jack Asher, Bernard Robinson, Len Harris, James Bernard, Bill Lenny, Jock May - it goes on. What do you remember of that team? I think you're right. Well it's always been a marvellous team. It's one thing that I can remember so vividly about those very happy days with Hammer. We really were a family. I loved working at Bray. It wasn't always very comfortable as you can imagine, but I didn't mind and physically I was able to do an awful lot of things that other actors couldn't do, which is a big plus in some of the films. I was very strong and very fast, particularly in Dracula , jumping over that table and hurtling through the air from that door. They didn't expect me to do that. We all knew each other very well and to a certain extent they all knew what I was going to do and I knew what they wanted.
