Extractions: For many years my father and I have been trying to find out exactly what happened to my Uncle, Sgt (Flight Engineer) Henry Pole, 1648307 Royal Air Force (Volunteer Reserve) 460 (Royal Australian Air Force) Squadron After much research we discovered that his Lancaster number JB598 took off from RAF Binbrook at 2012 hours on the night of 26th March 1944 for a bombing raid on Essen. The plane crashed on the German/Belgian border at Prum (Germany). The whole crew were killed and are today buried side by side at Hotton Military Cemetery (Belgium). Immediately after the crash however they were interred in the town cemetery at St Vith (Belgium) and there bodies moved after the war. Although we know that they died we have never been able to establish exactly how or when the plane was destroyed. were they outbound or returning? As Prum is way off course if the route was direct. We suspect maybe that a detour was used to confuse the Germans. Apparently there were rumours at the time of his death that the Germans were shooting airmen as they descended in their parachutes. This was told to my grandmother at the time and that my uncle had sustained terrible injuries and survived for a few days. I am suspicious of these rumours as it would mean that the Germans were very accurate with their shooting to kill all of the crew at one time, especially at night. We have been to the graves of the crew and all the headstones have the same dates of death

No mobiles, no Internet, just my birthday, a bottle of whisky, and reruns of Balamory . The most perfectly, or most stupidly, timed holiday. For on the 31st, I move to another country - Finland, in fact. Not sure if I can say precisely what I'll be doing yet - more after I start. I finished at Orange last week, and I've spent the remaining time, well, packing, and saying goodbye to people. It's normally hard to say goodbye to one person, but to do it en masse has been really difficult. You're all obligated to come and visit me in Helsinki. London has also been a bit of an interaction designer whirlwind, with Molly Anne and Fabio all flying in. Great to see Molly again, and really happy to finally meet Anne and Fabio. See you on the other side. link Comments (0) TrackBack (0) walking (choice of bridge)
Chris Davies MEP Hopes of restoring the northern reaches of the lancaster Canal to Kendal have been hasresponded to enquiries from Liberal Democrat EuroMP chris Davies by http://www.chrisdaviesmep.org.uk/news/2004/Apr/setback_for_lancaster_canal_plans
Extractions: Latest news News archive Thursday 8, April 2004 Hopes of restoring the northern reaches of the Lancaster Canal to Kendal have been dealt a severe blow by the North West Development Agency. Chief executive Steven Broomhead has responded to enquiries from Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Chris Davies by indicating that the agency is not convinced that the project is economically viable. Plans to create an inland waterway link all the way from the Lake District to London have aroused much enthusiasm since British Waterways made clear its interest in the scheme. The project has gained momentum since the completion of the Ribble Link has for the first time made possible the movement of boats from the Lancaster Canal to the rest of the inland navigation system across England. Restoration of the canal's northern reaches from its current terminus below Tewitfield locks would be a formidable task. The 14-mile stretch to Kendal has been closed since the 1960s and severed in four places by the M6 motorway and the A590 dual carriageway. Euro-MP Chris Davies, a canal enthusiast, has been a supporter of the project since its inception and says he is deeply disappointed by the response of the Development Agency.

How the Council works A 10-member executive body (leader + cabinet) makes all of the day-to-day decisions, although the Full Council of 60 members remains the supreme policy-setting body. Labour's Ian Barker is the Leader of the Council, and there are 4 other Labour members in the cabinet, plus 3 Liberal Democrats and 2 Greens (Jon Barry and Gina Dowding). Each cabinet member has a different portfolio (area of responsibility), but decisions are made collectively, by majority vote, at cabinet meetings. These are held approximately once per month, on Tuesdays starting at 10am, alternating between Lancaster and Morecambe Town Halls. Members of the public are very welcome to attend as observers, although at present they are not allowed to address the cabinet.
