Extractions: A Rockin' Aida Comes To San Jose Also see Richard's review of Phantom of the Opera The blockbuster musical from Disney Theatrical Productions, Elton John and Tim Rices Aida , comes roaring into the San Jose Performing Arts Center for a limited three week stay. This marks the start of the 2003-2004 American Musical Theatre of San Jose season. This time, the pop opera has three top flight singers and actors as the main characters of the timeless story of ill fated lovers. West End star Paulette Ivory plays Aida, Jeremy Kushnier is Radames and Goodspeed Opera House star Lisa Brescia is Amneris. I confess that in my earlier review of this spectacle ( see achives ), I was not fond of the music or lyrics in this show. We first saw the original at the Palace Theatre in New York with Heather Headley, Adam Pascal and Sherie Rene Scott, and the only plus side I could find was the singing of Ms. Headley and Ms. Scott. Even Wayne Cilentos choreography was a mess. When the first National touring company came to the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco with Patrick Cassidy, Simone and Kelli Fournier, I liked it much better. The three had a better handle on the main characters and the music started to grow on me. I also appreciated the sets and lighting better. This current touring production is on the par with the first National production and you cannot ask for better singers, dancers and actors. Its a rockin' musical that is pleasing to the eye and ear. Extractions: Jim Hindman Encouraged by the overwhelming response to last years event, Transport Group has scheduled Gimme A Break II for October 28th at the Culture Project, 45 Bleecker Street in New Yorks Greenwich Village. The concert will feature over 20 Broadway stars singing the songs that helped launch them on the Great White Way. Transport Group was created in January, 2001 by co-founders Jack Cummings III and Robyn Hussa with an eye towards mounting large-cast traditional American plays for todays audiences. Theres nothing unusual about theater companies hosting events to raise funds, but last year Jack wanted their fund-raiser to stand out in some way. Extractions: About Footloose the Musical Footloose is only one of a batch of dance-movies-turned-musicals from the late-'90s, but it's probably the best. Unlike Fame , it gives an audience the movie songs it expects to hear, and unlike Saturday Night Fever , it complements those songs with newly written, honest-to-goodness book songs that support the plot (written by Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow, who wrote songs for the original film). Like the 1984 Kevin Bacon film that inspired it, Footloose follows the story of Ren (Jeremy Kushnier), who moves with his mother (Catherine Cox) to a small town where dancing is prohibited by law. Teens will be teens, of course, so Ren ends up at odds with the town and especially the local minister, Reverend Moore (Stephen Lee Anderson). Along the way, the characters sing familiar songs from the movie ("The Girl Gets Around," "Holding Out for a Hero," "Let's Hear It for the Boy," "Almost Paradise," and of course the title tune), but the new songs are enjoyable as well.

Extractions: Set in ancient Egypt, the play tells the story of a Nubian princess, Aida, taken from her homeland by an Egyptian military captain named Radames. Even though the captain is set to wed the pharaoh's daughter, Amneris, he and Aida find themselves testing the boundaries of a forbidden love between master and slave, conquerer and conquered. Paulette Ivory and Jeremy Kushnier do a magnificent job of portraying the star-crossed lovers in the production. Their chemistry together is very electric, and you can sense the desparation between the two as they try to sort out some way to be together, even though it appears that it's not meant to be. Both Ramades' and Aida's fathers are against them being together, since the two countries are locked in war. As adversaries, the fathers cause further complications for the couple, drawing the inevitable "Romeo and Juliet" comparison. The story is based on a tried and true story line, but the songs and settings for the musical make it an original experience all its own.

Musicals Performers Book: Geek Love : A Novel - This is the story of a carnival family who, in order to save the carnival, give birth to manufacured "freaks" by ingesting drugs and arsenic. It is the story of these "freaks" that is amazing, sad, horrifying and funny. I was repulsed when I first began reading this book, but became mesmerized with the turning of each page. I couldn't put this book down and I kept wondering how it would end. It takes a great imagination to write such a vivid book. Katherine Dunn has written a wonderful, horrific book that will disgust and horrify you as well as make you laugh out loud. The "freaks" in the story are wonderfully crafted and you feel for each of them. They are just extraordinary beings experiencing ordinary feelings of love, hate, anger and jealousy in an unusual setting. I would highly recommend this book for someone who is looking for something unusual to read and is willing to embrace the unexpected. Music: Sacred Women: Women as Composers and Performers of Medieval Chant - While a multi CD collection spanning 30 years does sound very promsing, Nonesuch cannot offer all of the best recordings of some of Reich's masterpieces (Music for 18 Musicians or Drumming), and some have been missed out completely (Music for a Large Ensemble), presumably because the piece was not recorded under the Nonesuch label. While the collection is formidable, a listener wanting to hear the best recordings of all the pieces might do better seeking out the older (or longer!) recordings of the pieces.
