Extractions: Text: Abbas Kiarostami and his works have always been at one of the two extremes for Iranian critics: a phenomenon too sophisticated or too simple. In this debate, taken part by a number of Iranian critics the discussions seem to hinge around the sophisticated side. The director and his admirers go through the details of an anatomy they have thoroughly examined over and over before. Film International: First of all, let's bear in mind that we are by no men seeking your help to, sort of, interpret your film through your final solutions. We do not take a film as a cluster of knots waiting for us to undo them. Knowing your viewpoints will certainly be useful, although they will not necessarily outweigh our own attitudes. Abbas Kiarostami: I suppose, once a film is made, its creator should get detached and try to step back and look at it in a way just like any other spectator sees it. This might not be quite possible for him to adopt a totally objective attitude, though, due to his own presumptions and persistent memories. Therefore, I will give myself no more right to judge than anyone of you. I recently happened to watch my The Traveler again after 20 years. I think I could only now judge that film, having forgotten much of my memories and got rid of my worries for its ranking at competitions. As for f new work, the filmmaker's comments are less important and valid than those of simple movie fans.

Extractions: Text: Those who know Abbas Kiarostami also know his sunglasses. When he appears in public, his eyes stay hidden behind those dark glasses. He is said to have delicate eyes. On the screen, Abbas Kiarostami lends us a view of the people, whose lives pass before the lens of his film camera, as sensitive as film material. In the role of the scenarist he takes off his glasses. In his documentary, Homework, completed in 1989, Abbas Kiarostami can be seen playing a film director. He is interviewing pupils about their lives between school and their home, about their pleasures and their sorrows. During the interviews, Abbas Kiarostami is wearing his sunglasses. "In 'Homework' I made a mistake. I didn't take off my dark sunglasses," he admits today. "Had there been a director on the other side of the camera, he would certainly have told me to take off my sunglasses." "A pair of glasses limits the view. The frame of the glasses frames the view and allows the viewer to recognize only a slice of life. Moreover a pair of sunglasses makes this slice of life appear in a dark light which may easily entail the viewer to overlook the details hidden in the shadow. "Children are not likely to tell the truth in front of a camera, but rather something to please the adults. The children have learned what they must say to avoid the danger." Wearing his sunglasses. Kiarostami makes us understand that this kind of interview can only result in filtered truth.

It would be difficult to argue that any artist has produced work of a consistently higher quality over the past dozen years than Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. We ought to be grateful. Artistic continuity should not be taken for granted. Under the conditions of generalized intellectual retrogression, confusion and stagnation that dominated in the 1990s there was no guarantee that anyone would continue to strive for artistic truth. Kiarostami was one of those who did. This is an imperishable contribution. Seven of his films are best known to us: Where Is the Friend's Home?

Extractions: Kiarostami studied art at the faculty of Fine Arts in Teheran. He managed to graduate after thirteen years, but realised that he was not an artist and began to search for new avenues. Meanwhile, he worked for the traffic police, as a graphic designer and director for short film adverts. In 1969 he was asked to establish the film department at Kanun, the Institute for intellectual development of children and adolescents, which went on to become the fundamental aggregation point for new Iranian film production. Kiarostami made his first pieces there up until 1992, with the exception of Gozaresh. His work has been screened at the major international festivals, and he received his first most important recognition with Khaneh-ye doost kojast (1987), winning the Pardo di bronzo at Locarno in 1987. In 1992 Zendegi edameh darad (1991) won the Rossellini Prize at Cannes. In 1995 he was part of the jury at the Venice Film Festival and the following year presented Ta'm-e guilass (1997) which in 1997 won the Palme d'or ex aequo at Cannes. [Adapted from

Taste Of Kiarostami by David Sterritt Interview with film director abbas kiarostami the kind permission of the author of the interview and the editor of Film Comment. abbas kiarostami abbas kiarostami deserves more credit than any other single director for fueling http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/00/9/kiarostami.html
Extractions: Abbas Kiarostami David Sterritt is film critic of The Christian Science Monitor, chairman of the New York Film Critics Circle, Professor of Theater and Film at Long Island University, and author and editor of books on Jean-Luc Godard, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Altman, and the Beat Generation. Abbas Kiarostami deserves more credit than any other single director for fueling the recent rise of Iranian cinema, arguably the most dramatic film development of the past dozen years. The excitement started when his slyly reflexive Close-Up (1989) reached the international circuit in the early 90s, and crested when his extraordinary Taste of Cherry (1997) shared the Palme dOr at Cannes in 1997. While a handful of his Iranian colleagues have also achieved a fair share of Western recognitionincluding Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Jafar Panahi, both of whom have collaborated with himhe has remained the most highly visible figure, thanks to films like the so-called Koker trilogy ( Where Is the Friends Home And Life Goes On Through the Olive Trees [1994]) that have earned ecstatic reviews and drawn enthusiastic art-house audiences in Europe and the United States.

A festival representative revealed that two Chinese filmmakers also had difficulty obtaining visas, but ultimately received them. The esteemed Iranian artist has visited the US without entry problems at least seven times in the past decade. Another victimization of a renowned Iranian film director took place in April 2001, when Jafar Panahi (a sometime collaborator of Kiarostami) was viciously man-handled by US immigration officials during a stopover in New York City while in route from Hong Kong to film festivals in South America. Upon his arrival at JFK airport, immigration police took him to an office where he was chained to a bench for hours because he refused to be photographed or fingerprinted solely because of his nationality. After a harrowing ordeal, he was brought in chains to a plane that was going back to Hong Kong.
