In 1960 Bill Roycroft put the pain of a broken collar bone to the back of his mind, discharged himself from hospital and rode in the final day of the 3 day event, enabling his team to win gold. Gillian Robston in 1996 in Atlanta followed this great act of ANZAC spirit. After breaking bones because of falling off her horse in the cross-country event, Gillian completed the event enabling her team to win a gold medal. On many sporting arenas over the years, Australians have put the team before the individual to achieve the best result possible.

It was discovered that he was born with 8 broken bones and 2 hernias. Quentin was diagnosed with Osteo genesis-imperfecta, a rare bone condition that meant that his bones were very brittle. At six months of age the Australian public got its first glimpse of Quentin when Kerry was raising money to set up a disability foundation on The Mike Walsh Show A year later surgery was required. Unfortunately the medical technology in Australia was not as advanced, and Quentin's parents had to look elsewhere for someone to treat their son. Money was raised, and Quentin and his father Geoff flew to San Francisco. It was a successful trip. While there Geoff designed and built a new wheelchair for Quentin. Again this moment was captured on film, this time by the show Towards 2000 Interest in Quentin was growing, and after a few more visits from tv crews, journalist Mike Willesee came up with the idea to do a documentary about the young boy. It was filmed when Quentin was again overseas, this time with his mother Kerry. It won a Logie award and made Quentin a household name. In 1986 the then Prime Minister the Hon. Bob Hawke cut funding to the disabled.
