Extractions: John S. Rhodes asks: What is user experience and what does it mean exactly? How does it fit into usability, interaction design, user center design, and so forth? "User experience" simply refers to the way a product behaves and is used in the real world. A positive user experience is one in which the goals of both the user and the organization that created the product are met. "Usability" is one attribute of a successful user experience, but usability alone does not make an experience positive for the user. Historically, product design and development has considered the mere existence of a particular feature as evidence that a user goal is fulfilled by the product with no attention paid to the experience the user has with the product while using the feature. This is how we ended up with VCR clocks that no one can program. It all made sense to the engineers who put the product together, and it allowed management to check off "programmable clock" as a user need that had been met, but nobody thought to examine the problem from the perspective of the real-world use of the product. This bias toward internal thinking is why the method by which successful user experiences are created became known as "user-centered design". Previously, all we had was "engineering-centered design". Now we've got interaction design, information architecture, and other sub-disciplines to address the entire user experience.

Instead, he simply describes the process that web designers have been using to get things done. I say "simply", but that word belies the clarity and thoroughness of the book in its description of user experience design. One of the book's most valuable contributions is the explanation of exactly how the various specialties fit into the larger process. Information design, information architecture, visual design, interface design, interaction design; they're all represented in Jesse's model of user experience design (shown at right). Highly recommended for anyone involved in web design and developments, especially for managers and technical folk to get an idea of what us designers actually do. Here's chapter 2 of the book in PDF format to get you started.

Jim Leftwich leads the discussion and takes a look at Jesse's model of The Elements of User Experience beyond the scope of the web. In one of the comments he says to Jesse: "So you see, your model for the Element Planes fits perfectly well with the but for interaction design in general." Pretty neat. Jesse's model is specific enough without being too specific and general enough to be applied across various flavors of interaction design. That's why I think it has resonated so much with so many people across so many areas of this type of work. This is a good read and provides some interesting answers to a lot of great questions submitted by various other WELL readers in addition to the primary discussion leader.

A casual survey reveals more than 100 titles, from the sublimely fanciful to the seriously historical, presently available on Jesse James. It seems the subject has been pretty well exhausted. But T.J. Stiles attacks the subject from a different perspective. He does not treat the infamous James Gang as merely a collection of miscreants falsely sponsored by their commitment to the Lost Cause of the South, or as petty criminals and murderers elevated to historical prominence through tabloid-press sensationalism.
