Jacquot Una versione filmata dell'opera di Puccini, che conferma il fatto che l'opera si presta molto ad essere riprodotta al cinema (vedi: Flauto magico di Bergman, Don Giovanni di Losey, Cenerentola di Ponnelle). Un versione precedente, in prosa e senza musica, di Magni, era una ben misera cosa, a confronto. Jacquot filma il grande dramma romantico e risorgimentale con passione e partecipazione. In questi casi le cose di cui parlare sono due, il lato musicale e quello filmico. La versione operistica aveva due ottimi interpreti, Angela Gheorghiu (Tosca, una voce tonda e piena, ma non una Tebaldi, anzi con toni drammatici che ricordano la Callas) e l'immenso Ruggero Raimondi. Mario Cavaradossi e', come al solito, un urlatore ben poco sottile, e Roberto Alagna canta benino, ma recita malissimo.

Everyone (females too) is jealous of it, want to grab it, consume it, destroy it. It’s with the upper-middle-class wife Sandrine Kimberlaine in La Septieme Ciel/Seventh Heaven, that women start to fight back. It’s with the single and financially independent Isabelle Huppert of Jacquot’s l’Ecole de la chair/The School of Flesh, that women finally control the sex by controlling the purse-strings.

Mario Cavaradossi è un pittore impegnato nell'affresco di una chiesa (e la sua Maddalena somiglia molto ad Isild Le Besco, protagonista del precedente film di Jacquot, " Sade "). Mario è innamorato, ricambiato, dalla decisa e gelosa Tosca. Il capo della polizia, il Barone Scarpia, scopre che Mario ha aiutato un prigioniero politico a fuggire dal carcere di Castel Sant'Angelo e lo fa mettere sotto tortura. Tosca, per salvar la vita del suo amante, rivela al Barone dove si nasconde il fuggiasco, ma non è ancora abbastanza: se Tosca vuole che Scarpia lasci libero Mario, dovrà concedergli le sue grazie. La scansione delle inquadrature utilizzata da Jacquot, pur dando al film un ritmo lento e spesso statico, riesce a dare pieno risalto alla presenza scenica degli attori, in particolare della rumena Angela Gheorghiu. Sulle qualità vocali del cast non mi pronuncio, ma penso di poter dire che il momento migliore di tutto il film sia l'aria "E lucean le stelle", e a dare la pelle d'oca agli spettatori (me compreso, sia chiaro) ha sicuramente contribuito la scelta di mostrare un primo piano sostenuto di Roberto Alagna ripreso dall'alto nel momento in cui canta "e muoio disperato".
