He was the fifth of seven sons of William Henry Hope, a stone mason, and Avis Townes Hope, a former concert singer. When he was four, his father brought his family to Cleveland, Ohio. On December 20, 1920, by virtue of his father's naturalization, Bob - the name by which the world would later know him - and his six brothers also became U.S. citizens. In Cleveland, Hope attended Fairmount Grammar and Junior High Schools. During his years at East High, he worked as a delivery boy, a soda fountain clerk, and a shoe salesman. When he left high school, he went to work for a motor car company. The following year, he earned enough money to take dancing lessons from a couple of local instructors and even took over the classes for one of his teachers in 1922.

As wide and long as the FSS, the LMSRs carry almost twice the cargo because of the hull design and number of decks. Pedestal cranes and both side and stern ramps mean that the LMSR is ideally suited for undeveloped ports or logistics over the shore. MSC's Propositioning Program has 35 strategically located ships laden with military equipment, supplies and fuel for the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Defense Logistics Agency. Fifteen ships carry combat equipment and sustaining supplies for the U.S. Army, enough to sustain two Army heavy brigades up to 8,000 personnel for up to 30 days. Each Watson-class LMSR can carry an entire U.S. Army Armor Task Force including 58 tanks and 48 other tracked vehicles, plus more than 900 trucks and other wheeled vehicles.

Their variety shows were sponsored by the USO (United Service Organizations) and were packed with comedy monologues, specialty acts, celebrity appearances, skits, and music. Bob's irreverent and snappy humor - teamed with beautiful women who joined the tours - provided a cheering respite for U.S. servicemen and a reminder of what they were fighting for. The English-born Hope was already an American star when he began broadcasting radio shows from military bases in 1941. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Bob Hope packed a bag and took off for England, Europe, North Africa, and the South Pacific. With his Hollywood band of gypsies, Hope dodged a few bullets but kept the jokes flying ... "I have critics everywhere!" After the war, he staged a show for troops working around the clock during the Berlin Airlift in 1948. Thus began the annual Christmas tours that continued through the Korean, Vietnam, and even Gulf War conflicts. When asked why he still did military shows, Hope characteristically replied, "I guess I'm hooked on the box lunches." All jokes aside, he held a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by American troops. "They say I do so much for the G.I.s, but they don't know what it does for me."
