Extractions: Photos credit: Bob Czechowicz Well, my day started off at about 9:15 am when I met up with my buddy Steve at the Omega Diner in North Brunswick, NJ. After a hearty breakfast and some studying of the Late Show trivia cheat sheats that Steve made up, we were on our way into the city. Parked the car at about 10:45 am, and started walking over to 53rd and Broadway to the Ed Sullivan Theater. Right at 11 am we both got out our cell phones and started bombarding the standby ticket phone number hoping to get through. After about 8 minutes Steve let me know that he got through and he handed me his cheat sheet to hold in front of him in case the question was difficult. Low and behold they asked him the easiest question ever, "Who is Rupert Jee?". For those who don't know, he is the owner of the Hello Deli. So thanks to that easy question, we were numbers 10 and 11 in the standby line for the second taping!!! So now we made our way back over to behind the theater and got our spots by where the band comes in. Once again, we were hanging out with some really cool PJ fans and had some great conversations about RIOT ACT, previous tours, and what the PJ future may hold. At about 1:45, my trivia answer Biff Henderson came out to smoke a cigarette and told us that PJ should be arriving at about 2:15 or so.

I asked about the availability of pressing a * sequence to temporarily disable call waiting for the period of one call. "It's not available in Randolph". When might it be available? "Never". Why not? "It's available in towns with older switches" (that's not a mistype) "but not in towns with newer switches". Hmmm ... isn't that a little strange? "No - it's not in our future plans." Why not? "Too many people have missed important calls by disabling call waiting". Can you tell me the kind of switch handles Randolph? "No, we don't give out that kind of information - why do you want to know?" The Reds shortstop was termed ''a natural'' by NBC employees, who were wowed by his work with the network and its affiliates during the World Series. Larkin was brought to the Series to serve as a postgame analyst for the cable branch, CNBC, as well as to answer on-line questions for the network's Internet system, MSNBC. Larkin was so impressive during the first two games at Pro Player Stadium that NBC president Dick Ebersol increased his role and used him for pregame analysis and instructional bits on the parent network. According to Larkin's new colleagues, he has the potential to be a star. ''Barry is made for television,'' NBC reporter-anchor Hannah Storm said. ''He's very bright, he's got a great personality and he's got a great sense of humor. If he ever wanted a future in television, he's got a good chance to have one.'' It comes as no surprise to those who know or have played with Larkin that he already has established himself as a pressure player on television.

Extractions: NEW YORK When the goal is to shed unwanted pounds, selecting an entree from a restaurant menu can feel like navigating a minefield blindfolded. Just about every food listed appears to threaten the waistline. How to dine out and eat what you like is this week's lesson from Dr. Louis Aronne for the participants of The Early Show's Weight Off series. The Late Show's Biff Henderson visited us on Monday since he is most likely to benefit from Dr. Aronne's advice, as he works on losing a total of 20 lbs. Biff's television job calls for him to eat out several times a week and attend industry banquets, and, for him, dining out was his very own food lover's paradise. But since he joined The Weight Off band of six participants, he has modified his eating program. Biff started the program three days after the other five participants, so he has been playing catch-up. Thus far, he has lost 10 lbs. and says he feels quite good about it.

Extractions: David Lettermans stealthy, whirlwind Christmas visit to U.S. troops in Afghanistan was a surprise even to people close to the Late Show host. Accompanied by Paul Schaffer and stage manager Biff Henderson, Mr. Letterman left New York on Monday, Dec. 23, and traveled to Kandahar, where he spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with members of the armed forces. For a high-profile guy, Mr. Lettermans Afghanistan trip was a well-kept secret. Only a handful of staffers knew he was going. Its not certain if CBS president Leslie Moonves knewhe was away on vacation Dec. 27 and unreachablebut its clear that Mr. Letterman didnt want to kick up a lot of fuss about his plan, which he briefly discussed on the air during a Dec. 26 Late Show taped just hours after he, Mr. Schaffer and Mr. Henderson returned to New York.
