Extractions: The findings of an independent inquiry into the care of a paranoid schizophrenic who almost killed the former Beatle George Harrison are due to be published on Tuesday. Michael Abram, 35, stabbed the guitarist and songwriter in a frenzied attack on 30 December last year. Conducted by the St Helens and Knowsley NHS Health Authority on Merseyside, the inquiry will focus on the treatment Abram received from his local health authority. There has been criticism of doctors at a Liverpool hospital who allegedly mistook his mental illness for drug addiction. The father-of-two was charged with the attempted murder of Mr Harrison and his wife Olivia. But, following a two-day trial in November last year, the jury was told to acquit Abram, who believed The Beatles to be witches, on the grounds that he was temporarily insane. However, the judge Mr Justice Astill ordered him to be detained indefinitely in a secure hospital.

Lowly Fruit Fly's Amazing Flight Secrets London's Sunday People tabloid reported this weekend that the former Beatle may have only a week to live. Citing a family friend, the paper said Harrison's wife Olivia and their son Dhani have been told he could slip away "at any time." Harrison has even lost interest in eating, the paper said. No Luck With Radical Procedure Harrison, 58, left New York's Staten Island University Hospital last week after undergoing an experimental type of radiosurgery. That process reportedly did not stop Harrison's brain tumor from spreading. He flew from New York to UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles to treat the inoperable malignancy with the more conventional chemotherapy.
Extractions: If all things must pass, it doesn't mean the Quiet Beatle's going without a fight. Representatives for George Harrison announced Thursday that he recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth from one of his lungs. Harrison had the operation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, but did not say when (there's a reason he's known as the Quiet Beatle). a d v e r t i s e m e n t "The operation was successful and George has made an excellent recovery," reads a statement from the rocker's lawyers. "He is in the best of spirits and on top formthe most relaxed and free since the attack on him in 1999. He is now enjoying a holiday in Tuscany. "Although All Things Must Pass Away, George has no plans right now and is still Living in the Material World, and wishes everyone all the very best, God Bless and not to worry." The 58-year-old musician was diagnosed with throat cancer about four years ago after discovering a lump on his neck. In 1997, he was treated with two rounds of radiation therapy at the Royal Marsden Hospital. The reclusive Harrison admitted at the time that he got the disease from his heavy smoking habit.

Extractions: former Beatle, 54, told the "News of the World" that a lump on his neck was diagnosed as malignant last July. It was removed last August, and the operation was followed by two courses of radiation treatment in England. He was checked by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in January and again in May and was given a clean bill of health. Harrison maintained that he got it "purely from smoking." He had given up cigarettes years before but started again prior to quitting a second time last year. He says he discovered the growth last July while he was gardening at the 200-room mansion on an estate just west of London he shares with his wife Olivia and their 19-year old son Dhani.

Extractions: McCartney and John Lennon, the Beatles' two charismatic frontmen and principal songwriters, got most of the attention. But Harrison, the youngest Beatle who played lead guitar and wrote memorable songs such as "Something," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Here Comes the Sun" was considered by many to be the group's most thoughtful, spiritual member. His signature guitar style, owing both to blues and early rock and roll, gave the Beatles' music a distinctive character.
